Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Watson, And More Are Best Dressed At 2014 Golden Globes

While the People’s Choice Awards may have ~officially~ kicked off the 2014 awards season, tonight’s Golden Globes really catapulted the year of red carpet fashion into high gear. We pulled out six well-heeled ladies from the 2014 PCAs, but now, we’re bringing you a list of 10 for the Globes (though, TBH, we were tempted to just crown Lupita Nyong’o THE best dressed and go home, because girl SHUT IT DOWN).

I mean, do I really need to explain this decision? The 12 Years A Slave actress showed up EARLY to the Golden Globes red carpet wearing Ralph Lauren, and even well before most of the attendees arrived, she had clinched her position as the best dressed lady of the night. It’s solid but not boring thanks to that almost-neon red hue. It’s body-conscious without looking grossly painted on, and those classic RL clean lines are softened by her warm, beaming smile. With its straight off-the-shoulder neckline and long cape, the gown is definitely fashion forward, but this is also 100% the kind of timeless ensemble that we’ll be looking back fondly on for YEARS. (P.S. If this is what she pulls out for the Globes, we can’t WAIT to see what she whips out for the Oscars.)

EMMA WATSON IN CHRISTIAN DIOR

Also very high on our best dressed list is the consistently stunning Emma Watson. What makes her such a red carpet stunna is her ability to expertly toe the line between risk-taking and relatable, and the 2014 Globes were no exception. From the front, Emma’s bright coral Christian Dior ’fit looks fairly normal—the short sleeves aren’t something you see very often on red carpets and wowowowow is that a high middle slit. BUT THEN. She turns around and BLADOW, THAT BACK. You realize it’s not a gown and more like the world’s most glamorous apron worn over a pair of black satin trousers. SO unexpected and AWESOME.

ZOOEY DESCHANEL IN OSCAR DE LA RENTA

If there’s one person who you can bet will unflinchingly stay true to her personal style, it’s Zooey Deschanel. She’s just about guaranteed to bring her unique sense of whimsy to the red carpet, whether that’s in the form of super-cute nail art or a dress fit for a princess. Tonight, she did both, but we like this more ~adult~ version of Z.’s manic pixie dream girl (courtesy of Oscar de la Renta) with its sophisticated champagne color palette and trendy crop top.

TAYLOR SWIFT IN CAROLINA HERRERA

Taylor Swift was a major player in the night’s biggest trend: color blocking. Her Carolina Herrera gown featured a solid black sweetheart bust with a full, floor-length skirt in a waterfall of cherry red. T.Swizzle finished off the look with a matching red lip and retro curls.

EMMA ROBERTS IN LANVIN

Newly engaged Emma Roberts was breathtaking in inky Lanvin. It’s very easy for a black dress to look totally boring, but Roberts nails this look and then some with its striking neckline, fluted mermaid skirt, and a fit that usually only happens if you’re sewn into the garment. Plus, I have a sneaking suspicion this thing is neoprene (like what surfer’s wetsuits are made of), which is the best kind of curveball. Emma finishes off the look with a pristine ponytail, turquoise earrings, and an elegant smoky eye.

AMY ADAMS IN MAISON VALENTINO

She may have taken it off for most of the night, but Amy Adams was the Globes’ second caped lady of the night. Sticking with the color-block trend, her Maison Valentino ’fit featured panels of rich burgundy and bright fire engine red. Also, it looks like someone found her new favorite neckline: plunging.

KATE MARA IN J. MENDEL

Also batting for Team Low-Cut, Kate Mara shimmered in silver J. Mendel. We like this because those structured sleeves remind us of one of our all-time fashion icons: Judy Jetson. And we’re digging Kate’s new blonde ’do. Not every girl can survive the switch from brunette to flaxen.

EMILIA CLARKE IN PROENZA SCHOULER

It was a big night for solids, but we’ve gotta give it up for Emilia Clarke. Girl did Proenza Schouler micro-print exquisitely with a sweetheart neckline and gathered column skirt. Her hair was styled in medium length soft waves and parted down the middle—a look we wish we could wake up with every day.

LENA DUNHAM IN ZAC POSEN

Lena Dunham’s Zac Posen was one of the night’s more polarizing looks, but we’ve gotta give her props for opting for an unconventional bright in the dead of winter (even though it’s probably easier to do that in Los Angeles, a city that’s enjoying temperatures in the low 80s in the middle of January). We would’ve liked Lena to have at least one more fitting before hitting the red carpet in this guy, but whatever, she’s busy, y’know, premiering her show and maaaaaybe landing a Vogue cover.

MARGOT ROBBIE IN GUCCI

Finally, there’s Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie. Hoooooly Gucci. This white number is IMMACULATE. Like, this woman was almost definitely standing her whole way to the awards—there’s not a wrinkle in sight. With the simple crystal and emerald rhinestone embellishments, this is Gatsby glamour updated for 2014.
