Everyone knows the music for runway shows is muy importante. Sometimes eagerly awaited songs are introduced (see: Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2010), but even better than having recorded music played in the background? Having live music performed on the runway. As promised, Rebecca Minkoff had the Electric Lady herself, Janelle Monae, sing songs from her upcoming album as the models took their trips down the catwalk.
Janelle was decked out in her signature black-and-white pairing in white jeans, a short-sleeved white collared shirt, skinny black suspenders, and black almost knee-high boots. Her hair, of course, was in a pompadour, and her makeup was natural, except for a pop of a bright pink lip color. Her back-up singers complemented her simple, yet totally on-point look, in mod black-and-white referee-striped frocks, black leggings, and black and white cut-out heels (one singer had white, one had black. No mixing and matching, don’t worry!). We love nothing more than a good runway performance, so add our fave lady Janelle into the mix? Perfection. We’ll keep our eyes out for any more Janelle sightings at Fashion Week, as well as live runway performances. For all things cool and Fashion Week-y, stick with us.
