Versace Fever Hits The 2013 VMA Red Carpet

Versace. Versace Versace. Versace Versace Versace Versace Versace. Versace! Obviously the storied design house is not new to the hip-hop and rock worlds: in Migos’ number-one summer jam “Versace,” for instance, they were paying homage to the way the Notorious B.I.G. wore the iconic brand. But it’s definitely the brand’s summer—the label’s been popping more than usual, and even Lady Gaga announced she’s got a song on ARTPOP called “Donatella.” So, it’s appropriate that an awards show held a short walk away from Biggie’s original residence was populated with so many stars wearing the label.

It went far beyond #2Pantz—the cute moment when Chainz and Grimes realized they were wearing the same, fresh-off-the-runway Versace pants. (To be fair, there were subtle differences in the pattern.) Here’s a rundown of all the others paying homage to the label tonight:

Grimes was on double Versace overlap duty: supermodel Joan Smalls wore the same logo chain over her Viktor & Rolf frock that Grimes paired with her 2 Chainz pant. Just gonna throw this out there: supergroup?

Busta Rhymes had on thee most excellent custom Versace vest, in a pink-and-orange palm tree pattern that betrayed his Brooklyn upbringing and just screamed, “MIAMI!” He also dropped the most precious bit of red-carpet knowledge: “It’s all about being fabulous and being comfortable.” Word.

The drape on Selena Gomez’s STUNNING bustier/ballgown combo jammer, from Atelier Versace A/W 2013. THE DRAPE, people. She was giving us boudoir with class. Miley was trying to convey that she’d grown up, but this was Selena saying it without saying it. Which is hella adult, to be honest.

Artist to Watch Moonman winner Austin Mahone wore a Versace belt with his bad self.

Drake did not perform “Versace,” his remix of Migos’ label-fête’ing song, but we know it was there in his heart, AS IT WAS IN OURS. For the record, though, he walked the carpet in custom Nothing Was the Same promo gear, all-black. We’re pretty sure that Versace would remix that, though, if asked.
