Remember That Time Lil Kim Wore A Boob Onesie To The 1999 VMAs?

Thinking back on the most iconic VMA fashion moments of all-time, most everyone’s top 10, maybe even top 5, will include these four standbys: Lady Gaga’s meat dress, Madonna’s bridal “Like A Virgin” moment, Britney Spearsaccessory python, and of COURSE, that time Lil Kim wore a purple onesie to the 1999 VMAs with her left boob hanging out. In our opinion, it’s always a fitting year to relive this magical show-stopping sartorial moment, but it’s even more appropriate given this year marking not only the Video Music Awards’ return to New York (the 1999 show took place at NYC’s Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center), but ALSO given we’re breaking new ground in Kimmy Blanco’s hometown of Brooklyn.

More than just staring at this GIF of *that* moment Diana Ross tested Kim’s exposed mammary for buoyancy (though, we could do that forever, tbh), we went back and dug up our archival footage from the 1999 VMA episode of House Of Style and landed at the infamous ensemble’s red carpet debut. Just to underscore what it is you’re watching, it was unmistakable even then that Queen Bee’s award show look, in all its lilac, sequined, asymmetrical-neckline, seashell pastie, red carpet jumpsuit GLORY, was one for the sartorial history books. Then-HOS host, Rebecca Romijn, even demanded a full head-to-toe shot on the spot.

The iconic ’fit was designed by Kim’s stylist Misa Hylton, worn with a matching purple-hued wig, and accessorized with little more than a pair of sparkly Steve Madden platforms. Watch it all go down in our clip from the 1999 VMA red carpet, then hear Kim herself talk about the unforgettable ensemble when she takes Sway on a tour of Biggie’s Brooklyn at 5 p.m. EST on the VMA All Access Live Stream. And don’t forget to tune in to the 2013 VMAs when the pre-show goes live from the Barclays Center red carpet at 8 p.m. EST, Sunday, August 25 for your first look at who might be wearing this year’s headline making outfit!
