The 5 Best Brooklyn Nail Art Salons

In case y’all have been living under a rock/stuck on a remote island sans WiFi for the past several months, the 2013 Video Music Awards are happening this weekend!!! Us New Yorkers are particularly excited because it’s all going down at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and to celebrate, we’re doing some killer Brooklyn-themed fashion pieces right here on MTV Style. We already dished on our Fulton Mall faves and reminisced over the Bed-Stuy-inspired fashion in Do The Right Thing, but now we’re switching it up to the hottest beauty spots in BK. Since it’s Manicure Monday, we figured this would be the PERFECT time to mention our favorite nail art salons in the area, and, yes, that means we won’t be mentioning any places in Manhattan. (Sorry, Valley NYC!)

One of our go-to faves is the Tomahawk Salon in Bushwick. You might remember when we took y’all there to get Iggy Azalea’s nails did last summer, and it’s still one of our top spots to date! The main reason? Fleury Rose. The Illamasqua ambassador is by far one of the most talented gals in the hood, and you can even check out her work in action if you don’t believe us!

Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss and nail artist Ria Lopez.

If it weren’t for the neon leopard “Ria Nailz” sandwich board sign outside Maritza’s Unisex salon in Greenpoint, we’re pretty positive you’d walk right past this place not knowing there’s a killer nail artist inside. Ria Lopez, who decks out Sleigh Bells frontwoman Alexis Krauss’ nails on a regular basis, is the queen of intricate nail art. She can do everything from tribal designs to studded-out tips and everything in between. Best part is that we’ve got the footage to prove it!

In the heart of Williamsburg is Hello Beautiful—a bold and bright salon that houses one of THE best NYC-based nail artists to boot: Naomi Yasuda. One look at her website, and you’ll see that she’s done nail art on everyone from Madonna to Alicia Keys to Cassie. When she’s not busy doing Kenzo campaigns or high-fashion magazine spreads, you (might!) be able to find her at Hello Beautiful, but honestly all of their nail techs are total pros.

Some nail salons just get it, and that’s the best way to describe Very Polished. Not only do they provide straight-up gel nail art, but they also offer caviar, velvet and Minx manis, which we LOVE. If you’re lucky, you may even spot visitors Adrienne Bailon or Ne-Yo. In the meantime, though, check out their Insta to get super inspired.

Nail art from Primp and Polish.

Primp & Polish is great if you just want to walk in and get a great mani no matter who you choose. Take a quick gander through their Instagram to see the killer range of designs—we’re OBSESSED with this clear gel on matte black set because, um, just look at it. (Also, it’s right next to Bird so you can do a little shopping right after you’re done. Score!)
