It was only a matter of time until we did this, right? Lady Gaga’s “Applause” single art—which spotlights just her face in colorful, smeared face paint—was released in late July, but it’s taken us until NOW to try it on ourselves.

Part of that is because she hadn’t started wearing it IRL until earlier this week to promote her new single (which she’s performing at the 2013 VMAs, BTW). The other part is that this beauty look is very heavy on the “ART” aspect of ARTPOP. It’s rare that we stray from the daily makeup mainstays of black liner, a little mascara, and some kind of lip situation (I know, bare bones), so we knew we had to enlist in the help of professionals (a.k.a. the nice folks at the Sephora across the street from our offices) for this one.

Makeup artist magician Ashlee Sadler hooked us up, and (along with a Vine and a ton of mental snapshots of hilarious reactions) we took down meticulous notes on what she did. Just in case you want to recreate the look yourself.

1.) Apply a thin layer of Sephora Collection Instant Moisturizer over your entire face.

2.) Add a layer of Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer to ensure your homage to Mother Monster stays put.

3.) Even out your skintone with COVER FX Cream Foundation in your color.

4.) Ensure that all stays in place with some Tarte Amazonian Finishing Powder.

5.) You’ll notice Gaga is REALLY glowing. Get the same effect by brushing a combination of Illamsqua Gleam Cream and Illamsqua Powder Blusher in Katie on your forehead, nose, and cheekbones.

6.) Get Gaga’s sculpted cheeks by sweeping Kat Von D Everlasting Bronzer just under your cheekbones and toward your ears.

7.) You’ll be putting a fair amount of color on your lids. Make sure that stays put by applying some Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer to your lids.

8.) Now comes the fun part. ALL. THOSE. COLORS. Ashlee used the Make Up For Ever 12 Flash Color Case and mixed a lot of custom colors (particularly that pale yellow that she combed through my eyebrows). For this, you’re just going to have to trust your eye, mixing up using your fingers for bigger areas and brushes to get more of an artsy, painter’s palette feel.

9.) Next, create some definition for your eyes by lining your top lids with Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Sabbath and brushing on some Ardency Inn PUNKER Unrivaled Volume & Curl Lash Wax. Also, it’s all downhill from here.

10. Finally, there’s the lip. Apply a generous amount of Ardency Inn BOOM BASE Lip & Balm Base, blending it in a little to let it moisturize and condition, then using a brush to apply Ardency Inn MODSTER Long Play Supercharged Lip Color in Kick for that bright, matte, coral.

And you’re done! Wear your Lady Gaga makeup look with pride and wait for the, y’know… APPLAUSE.
