This month 25 years ago, a little show called “Yo! MTV Raps” premiered on the very network we call home. It revolutionized rap and the landscape of music in general, catapulting what was once an underground genre intro the public televised eye. Since then, the widespread awareness and popularity of rap has escalated, and its pop culture footprint—influencing music, style, language, and more—only continues to grow. The show’s run may have ended in 1995, but its role as a catalyst for the dissemination of rap to the masses is an undeniable one. In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Yo! MTV Raps,” Stüssy has released a collaborative collection featuring 10 influential artists from the show’s run.

The range of tees and sweatshirts (hooded and crewneck!) are emblazoned with screens of Ice T, Eric B. and Rakim, Gang Starr, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, MC Lyte, Digital Underground, Queen Latifah, and De La Soul. On top of the 30-piece collection, Stüssy also put together a 2-part documentary called “We Were All Watching” with a cast of 14 closely-tied interviewees. The first part, entitled The Importance of Yo! MTV Raps, illustrates the groundbreaking history of the show, while the second part, Fashion in the Golden Age of Hip Hop, breaks down hip-hop’s style influence over time.
