R.I.P. "California Gurls"-era Katy Perry. The KP we all knew and loved died today: she was killed by the new (improved? IDK) "Roar"-era Katy Perry. "California Gurls" Perry was a long-time resident of Candyfornia and best known for her bright purple and blue wigs, whipped cream bra, and love of all things sweet. The former era saw the release of Katy's third studio album, Teenage Dream, which provided six singles, including the eponymous "Teenage Dream" and Fourth of July staple "Firework" (which garnered its own spark-shooting bra). California Gurls Katy Perry also released a 3D movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me, which documented her life on a 126-show worldwide tour, as well as the demise of her marriage to Russell Brand. "California Gurls" Katy Perry was upbeat, colorful, was really into latex, and now, she's gone.

She is replaced by "Roar"-era Katy Perry, who is darker, edgier, and doesn't care that you miss her predecessor. On Friday, "Roar" KP began her destruction of her former CG self by setting her iconic blue wig aflame and watching it burn. Then, today, she put the nail in the (literal) coffin, as she stood amongst mourners, including two young fans in purple wigs, and chuckled. This is not the same spinning-peppermint-bra-wearing Katy P. This one is kinda mean? And prefers purple lipstick, leather studded chokers, and punky Vivienne Westwood-reminiscent open-knit sweaters. (Evidently, she still likes nail art, though.)

So, let us mourn the death of "California Gurls"-era Katy Perry, but let us also acknowledge that we've been hearing songs from that album since 2010. Three years worth of "E.T." is a lot of "E.T." We should embrace the "Roar"-era Katy Perry as we've embraced the Katy Perrys before her, and hope she provides us with a song as catchy as "Teenage Dream." Katy Perry's new album, Prism, drops October 22, so you have time to adjust to the new Katy Perry you'll be seeing and hearing.
