From the moment we set eyes on the very first production still released to the media, we’ve been holding our breath for the official stateside release of Sofia Coppola’s newest film The Bling Ring. We’ve been following along from teaser to trailer, poster to interview, and all of Emma Watson’s editorial spreads, and now, with last night’s Los Angeles premiere, we’re that much closer to being able to watch the movie whenever and as many times as we want! Emma and her co-stars Taissa Farminga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, and Claire Julien, all turned up their style game for the event, each cast member’s red carpet ensemble more high fashion that then next.
Emma, who in her own words “[doesn’t] really ’star’ in the Bling Ring [and is] probably 3rd/4th of the lead characters. (In case media/marketing is a bit misleading),” wore a beautifully structured tweed Chanel Fall 2013 dress with Giuseppe Zanotti heels. Taissa wore a prim cobalt shift by Louis Vuitton, while Israel went for black on black on black with a peak lapel and skinny tie. Katie Chang reprised her love of Dior (first seen at Cannes) with a short floral cocktail dress, and Claire Julien rounded out the FASHUN with a show-stopping, long-sleeved, bodycon Balmain mini dripping with gold details. Sartorial savvy among the cast reached a collective all-time high with the premiere, and understandably so as the event was tag-teamed hosted by Louis Vuitton and Vanity Fair. ALSO, there are about eight bajillion fashion references in the movie itself.
We were lucky enough to snag an early screening of the film, and boyoyoyoy, we cannot overstate just how many overt references to the fashion industry are laced throughout. Not saying that we took notes during the movie, but well… OK we did. There are unsaid nods via a shopping sequence at Kitson or Marc’s *achem* newly acquired LV logo luggage, not to mention the treasure trove that is Paris Hilton’s house, but we were able to count 14 explicit fashion-related utterances: Fashion Insitute of Design and Merchandising, Teen Vogue, Chanel (three times), Prada, Miu Miu, the Hermes Birkin bag, Fashion Week, Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin (twice), Balmain, Herve Leger, Rick Owens, BCBG, and Rolex. PHEW! What’s more, the characters are able to pronounce each one correctly with the utmost aplomb which is no small feat.
Friday, June 14 is the initial release date for The Bling Ring. Check it out for yourself and let us know how many of the fashion references YOU were able to spot!
