We’ve grown accustom to Demi Lovato serving up angst, edge, black lipstick with silver body paint and spiked manicures all throughout her promotion of DEMI, but much like the album itself, D isn’t all wailing up-tempo pop ballads and smoky eyes. She embraces her softer side (as far as the photos are concerned, that is) in NYLON’s music issue, working a fresh-faced natural beauty look—pretty pink lips, the BEST mascara, and a subtle sheen of blush across the apples of her cheeks—and very demure ladylike steez.

In the interview, Demi’s classic hyper-REALness shines through as she apologizes upfront for talking with her mouth full and admits she has a mouth like a sailor. That particular quote is pulled and featured, scrawled down the length of the page and over a serene black and white snap of Demi in this Maje lace dress and collared shirt by (of course) Topshop. The text and image seem at odds with each other but it’s the tension caught in that juxtaposition that embodies so much of why we unfailingly love Demi.
