Avril Lavigne Gets Tough On The Cover Of ‘NYLON’ Music Issue

When it came out in 2002, I used to listen to Avril Lavigne’s debut album, Let Go, over and over again on my headphones in the dark. The spokeswoman for sad, “Complicated” teenage girls, Avril was the early aughts’ Alanis, and at least everyone I knew was completely into it. It’s more than a decade later, now, and both we—the girls listening to Let Go in the dark and Avril herself—have grown up, but she is still going strong, making music and refining her signature skater girl style. This month, she’s on the cover of NYLON’s music issue, giving a cuts-right-through-you stare that has us fully convinced that growing up hasn’t taken away a hint of her edge.

The cover, which was photographed by longtime NYLON shutterbug Brooke Nipar, shows Avril wearing her hair long, loose, and totally blonde (no rainbow streaks here!) and sporting her signature kohl-rimmed beauty look. And as for the styling, well, it’s simple— a black leather jacket, bracelets, and black tights. For a woman whose new single is called “Here’s To Never Growing Up,” Avril sure seems like she has. We’re not mad, though; we couldn’t stay angst-ridden teenagers forever, either.

The star gets sultry inside the spread, rocking a bodycon black leather pencil skirt and white t-shirt, and badass expression. Yep, Avril definitely doesn’t look like she’s the kind of girl you would want to run into in the dark.

Don’t be afraid, though! Avril also takes a break from it all, giving kissy faces to the camera in her cover look. One of our favorite things about the singer is the fact that she seems like she would be SUPER fun, and we’re glad the shoot reflects that, as well as the other facets of her personality.
