Cara Delevingne, Miley Cyrus, And More Of The Most Committed Punk Looks From 2013 Met Gala

It was the question heard ’round the world (and the interwebs) ever since we first got word of 2013’s Met Gala theme: HOW do you dress for “Punk: Chaos to Couture“?! Well, the rebellious rough-and-tumble inspiration for tonight’s main event may have thrown some attendees for a loop, but that’s OK, because we found more than enough style stars to stay true to theme and shake things up on the red carpet. Of COURSE mainstays like Debbie Harry, Donatella Versace, and Vivienne Westwood did it right—that much should have been given. But the ladies we’re calling out below are the ones who surprised us by their unexpected loyalty to the theme, those who weren’t afraid to go beyond the safety pins and a few statement studs. So let’s all give a round of applause for the most creative, most committed punk-themed Met Gala outfits of the night, shall we?

If there’s anyone we can count on to get down with a theme, it’s this girl! Cara Delevingne may be a supermodel, but you’d better bet she went all-out punk tonight in a custom studded Burberry dress. Rocking that seriously plunging V-neck like there’s no tomorrow and showing off her Genevieve Jones earpiece with a deep side part, we ALL wish we could make punk somehow look that…well, pretty? Sigh.

Proving that there’s still a little Carrie Bradshaw fashion craziness running through her veins, Sarah Jessica Parker knocked it out of the park tonight in an amazing graphic print Giles Deacon dress. Topped off with an epic Philip Treacy mohawk headpiece, this ensemble hopscotches the line between kooky and cool with an extra rebellious kick. LOVE.

We already know that Lily Collins is a talented actress, owner of amazing eyebrows and possessor of imitable style. But who ever suspected that she could do punk so well?! The 24-year-old took tonight’s “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme to heart in a seriously impressive way, betwitching everyone in her darkly glam Moschino getup. Between the sequined flying-heart jacket, the pleated gown, and the INSANE (in a good way, obviously) makeup, this list wouldn’t be complete without her.

Few musicians understand the art of assuming a character quite as well as Madonna. Madge may be the longtime lauded Queen of Pop, but rolling around on a stage in a modified wedding dress and boy toy belt is no bubblegum feat. Madonna knows a thing or two about being rebellious and dressing to fit the bill, and never was that more true on the 2013 Met Gala red carpet. Madge dressed for the occasion in a tartan Givenchy blazer with strong shoulders, layers of fishnet, gobs of hardware, and a very Mia Wallace hair situation.

Speaking of hair, enter Nicole Richie. We’re giving the Winter Kate designer major props for this Met Gala look. We’re not necessarily saying this is 100% true to the theme, but we appreciate that Richie embraced one of the most iconic elements of punk style: loud, unnatural hair color. Nicole matches her hair to her bright white custom Topshop gown and finishes the look off with dark lipstick, spiked ear cuffs, a treacherous looking manicure.

And then there’s Miley Cyrus. A kind of unlikely touchstone for the entire “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme, Miley straight-up nailed the balance of high fashion and grit with this Marc Jacobs fishnet column dress and her platinum hair splayed out and reaching for so much height. WERK IT, GURL.
