We can’t say that we explicitly knew that A$AP Rocky was going to be walking in yesterday’s Hood By Air New York Fashion Week show, but we definitely had a feeling he’d be there in some major capacity. Rocky reps HBA in a very serious, born-from-blood type of way, from name-checking the label in lyrics — “Hood By Air, man, I started that” — to pilfering the brand’s closet for nearly his entire “Long.Live.A$AP” music video wardrobe to creating the runway soundtrack for last season’s Spring 2013 Hood By Air fashion show. Dat PMF made his allegiance and unequivocal support of HBA and the line’s designer, Shayne Oliver, unmistakably clear by making an unannounced guest appearance, emerging from a cloud of dry ice fog to close out the Fall 2013 show.

We had the esteemed pleasure of chatting with Oliver behind the scenes at Milk Studios as he prepped for his Sunday afternoon show. Shayne elaborated on the brand spankin’ new collection to follow, his favorite of his creations this season (a white fabric-covered, neoprene, convertible jacket with iridescent mint screen printing *knee-jerk covets with ENTIRE body and soul*), and how Rocky gels with the Hood By Air modus operandi. Of course, it wasn’t until the actual show (and we do mean SHOW) that we finally felt like we understood what he meant when he said this collection was about “expanding on the brand.”

First of all, this was truly an inspired production — ice blue lasers reflecting on fog and creating an electric water effect, intermittent cameos from performance artist Boychild, and of course, that A$AP grand finale — but not done-up in a way that over-powered the clothes themselves. Shayne took Fall 2013 to the late ’90s with zip-away leathers, cargo pockets, shiny nylons, and a nod to the tribal tattoos everyone and their mom (and their favorite member of 98 Degrees) was sporting at the time. On top of all that, the HBA Fall 2013 drew a crowd of fashion cool-kids including Virgil Abloh, Theophilus London, and a pomeranian-toting Nicola Formichetti.
