It seems Mara Hoffman lives in a gypset world of eternal sunshine. She’s the queen of color and dazzling, well-traveled prints year-round, but it’s now, in the dredges of winter, that we appreciate her sunny design disposition most. The collection Mara unveiled today was steeped in corals, cobalts, and ultra fuschias with intricate, symmetrical prints, seemingly influenced by all corners of the world — speckled radials, stained glass motifs, and technicolor zebra stripes. Whether silhouettes were body-conscious or floaty and ethereal, every ensemble on Mara’s runway was striking and dramatic. Models were accessorized with metal cap-toe shoes, Pamela Love armor rings, and earring chains draped from lobe to lobe across each model’s back and long hair.

Amidst the rainbow of bohemia, the full-length black numbers interspersed throughout were especially breath-taking. For the onyx-hued ensembles Mara still doesn’t stray far from her gypset ways with silvery embellishments, delicate embroidery, and weightless sheer fabrics. With all this oscillating from one unexpected high to another, the Fall 2013 collection demanded an equally eclectic and high energy soundtrack. Thanks to DJ Ben Brunnemer who’s been creating Mara’s runway playlists for years, this season’s show got exactly that.

We talked to Ben after the presentation about the runway music, and he revealed that two songs of the five-song mix were created by a Ratatat x White Flight collaboration side-project called White Wizard. “It’s a bunch of new music off their forth-coming record,” Ben said, “Those songs haven’t actually been released yet. They’re coming out in the spring.” Brunnemer explained further that earlier this year, Ratatat’s E*vak and White Wizard had worked with the designer on the music for her Spring 2013 campaign video, and when it came time for the show, they threw the new music to Ben and Mara for the exclusive premiere before the songs are available commercially!
