We can always count on mermaid dresses to be a red carpet staple, and for good reason: they’re sleek, they’re flattering, AND they’re a shortcut to instant Old Hollywood glamour…without branching too much into frilly princess territory. So while it’s not exactly surprising that this flared silhouette made multiple appearances at the Golden Globe Awards tonight, the stars who sported them stood out with her own special touches.

These three ladies took the trend to its extreme, each opting for designs with MAJOR drama. Bring it! Girls star Allison Williams stunned in a J Mendel Pre-Fall 2013 black gown, complete with a va-va-voom halter neck and showstopping cut. With a dress THIS eye popping, the actress kept the rest the ensemble appropriately minimal (read: slick bun and few accessories) for a super sophisticated result. Then there’s Kelly Osbourne, who brought it big time in her pale green number by Zac Posen. It’s not the first time she’s rocked a mermaid dress at the Globes— remember that blue Zac Posen ensemble from last year? (hey, if it ain’t broke…). With her purple hair and the frock’s sweet ruffled details, it’s hard NOT to compare Kelly to a modern-day (and ultra cool) Ariel. But nobody on the red carpet can really compare to the epic-ness that is Amy Adams and her pale, ballet slipper pink Marchesa gown. The top of the dress might be relatively simple, but then descends into a layered tulle skirt at the bottom. Now THIS is glamour.
SLEEK AND SUBTLE

Sweetheart necklines ruled the carpet tonight! Megan Fox, Sarah Hyland and Hayden Panettiere took a more subtle approach with their takes on the mermaid, proving that understated definitely DOESN’T necessarily mean boring. Megan hopped on the blush-toned train in her Dolce & Gabbana strapless dress with a gorgeous fluttering bottom. Dressed in another one of the trendiest colors of the night, Sarah Hyland’s black Max Azria Atelier ensemble came adorned with a satin peplum top and flowy skirt. Never one to forget her nails, the Modern Family actress completed the look with a wine and gold manicure (making mental nail notes now….). Finally, Nashville’s Hayden Panettiere went classic in a blush Roberto Cavalli mermaid gown, proving that three trends really are better than one.
