Lianne La Havas Is A Rising Style Star

With molasses-smooth vocals and a smoky R&B vibe, listening to Lianne La Havas is almost like being transported to another era. It’s this rare, sparkling quality which allowed the 22-year-old former Paloma Faith backup singer to break out on her own with a solo album last year…and land a Mercury Prize nom, natch. But while her debut Is Your Love Big Enough? might lend a welcome dose of nostalgia, the English multi-instrumentalist sticks with a style that’s young, fresh, and totally current.

After years of performing, Lianne knows what works for her onstage and off and isn’t afraid to wear closet staples more than once. Case in point: her beloved leather skirt, which we’ve counted the singer sporting at LEAST 3 times in one month…which is a lot if you happen to be an emerging music star. She paired it with a black and white collared button-up at MTV Crashes Manchester event in September. Thanks to tricks like a knotted top and a cropped embellished blazer, the whole look is a quirky-cool take on the schoolgirl uniform. Lianne went rocker earlier in the month, complementing the flippy skirt with sturdy brown boots and a vintage t-shirt. Then, proving just HOW versatile the piece really is, Lianne dressed up her uniform for the Alice + Olivia Fashion Week presentation in a floral tank and heels. This girl obviously has a stylist’s eye, and she hasn’t let us down once.

Lianne kills the formal fashion game as well, recently hitting the red carpet at the Barclaycard Mercury Prize ceremony wearing a white long-sleeved gown. It might seem simple, but the body-hugging number was chic enough to let the rest of Lianne- including her dramatic cat eye and gorgeous waves- truly shine. As easy as it is for the songbird to go neutral, that doesn’t mean she can’t crank up the heat! Just look the canary-yellow Maison Vionnet number she rocked in October for the designer’s 100th Anniversary…now THAT’S eye-popping. Finally, she showed a quirkier side at the Q Awards in September dressed in a abstract print frock by up-and-coming designer ZDDZ London. #killinit

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…right?! Lianne’s love for statement puffy sleeves is enough to convince us to finally work on our fashion commitment-phobia. She just looks SO good! She’s rocked the puff more times than we can count, but pretty much oozes adorableness while performing at festivals over the summer. Lianne might not be the only female singer who loves a good statement sleeve (see also: Kimbra , Rihanna, and Miley) but works it consistently enough to make the look all her own.
