The Best Red Carpet Style of 2012

It's December 21st and the world hasn't ended, but we ARE one day closer to the end of the year! What does that mean? Why, a brand new Best of 2012 post for you, of course. This week's offerings were a bit more about fun than they were about breaking it down, with the Best Fashion Lyrics and yesterday's music video paper dolls cracking us up in our almost-holiday madness. Today, however, we have a more serious best of to break down for you: The Best Red Carpet Looks of 2012.

Gah, this one was a doozy. How do you choose from a whole year of sparkly, silky, long, short, frilly, gorgeousness? How do you pick just ONE look from each of your favorite stars when there are SO MANY AMAZING ones? We were kind of hoping the Mayans would be right on this one and we would be off the hook, but alas, the world is still very much turning and so we got put on the hot seat. Now, disclaimer, there were so many amazing red carpet outfits this year that we cannot say that these are ALL of the best, so just consider this MY personal fave red carpet looks of 2012.

BEYONCE IN GIVENCHY AT THE MET BALL

First of all, a disclaimer: Beyonce could show up on a carpet in a potato sack, or in all of the things we've discussed in Weird Wednesday this year combined, and she would probably still look the most incredible. The combination of her superhuman poise, that smile, and her incredible bod make her a red carpet hit, and so Bey at The Met gala was a guaranteed home run. But were we expecting this incredible black and sheer Givenchy gown, cascading down her frame into a pool of black and purple feathers? No. It. Blew. Our. Minds. Bey strolled up fashionably LAST to the ball's red carpet, and immediately stole the night from some very stiff competition, making this perhaps our #1 favorite red carpet look of 2012. We say perhaps, however, because we're not picking favorites, not exactly.

LILY COLLINS IN DOLCE & GABBANA AT THE CARTIER JUSTE UN CLOU AFTERPARTY

2012 was a REALLY good year for pantsuits. Between Taylor Swift and Kat Graham at the VMAs and K.Stew's various looks incorporating shorts into the mix, the gown got a run for its money. We wanted to pick our fave pantsuit look of the year, though, and the prize went, hands down, to Lily Collins, in this classic Dolce and Gabbana number. Black and white is always a good look, and pairing a classic cut with a cascade of ruffles down the button placket adds just the little bit of feminine flair that a look like this needs to avoid looking like an audition for Victor Victoria. Paired with smoky eyes, red lips, and a sleek pulled-back hair style, everything about Collins' look screams sophistication.

KATY PERRY GOES GOTH AT THE NARM MUSIC BIZ AWARDS

This one isn't as much about the dress as it is about the overall look. Katy Perry switched up her usual sunshine and lollipops costume at the Narm Music Biz awards in favor of a look that was much closer to teen witch than kitty cat. Pairing a black dress with horizontal sheer panels, a rosary, and center parted deep purple locks, Katy totally killed the goth girl vibe that was so big this year. Also her lip color is absolutely the perfect shade of purple. While this is one of the more casual looks on this list, it remains a fave for being a happy sartorial surprise.

JADEN AND WILLOW SMITH GET MATCHY MATCHY THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Get your collective "awwww" out of the way now, please. We LOVE it when Willow and Jaden Smith pull out the coordinating looks on the red carpet, and our favorite of their looks was definitely the ultra cool looks they rocked at the Toronto International Film Festival. Jaden wore his usual MSFTS tee, sleek leather pants and leopard vans, while Willow rocked a Versace mini dress topped with a cropped blazer and AMAZING gold collar, all pulled together by Chloe buckled and studded boots. We love both Smith's looks because they stay age-appropriate while still being completely cool and more than a little bit edgy. We cannot wait to see what these super sibs have for us on carpets to come, and we have a feeling it's just going to keep getting better and better.

EMMA WATSON IN BROOD AT THE MTV MOVIE AWARDS

Emma Watson was majorly on our radar as one to watch on the red carpet in 2012. She had some big time movies out this year, and so we knew that the actress would be showing some major style, and boy were we right. One of our favorite looks from the star was this sportswear-inspired minidress from Brood, that Emma effortlessly rocked on the Movie Awards red carpet. With a racer back and a contrast blue peplum, the dress calls to mind a scuba suit in the best possible way, and it solidified Watson's place as a star willing to take risks on the carpet.

KRISTEN STEWART IN BALENCIAGA AT THE ON THE ROAD PREMIERE

Kristen Stewart gave us so many amazing and daring red carpet looks this year, it's nearly impossible for us to pick a favorite. There was one, though, that had everyone in the fashion world talking, and so naturally we couldn't make it a year in review without mentioning it. We're talking, of course, about the Balenciaga trousers and crop top that K.Stew wore on the carpet for the On the Road premiere. The white bustier top seemed made especially to wrap around the drape of the high-waisted trousers, and both seemed to have been made especially to fit Kristen's body. Paired with pointed-toe pumps and a fruit punch colored lip, this was a look in which Kristen looked totally comfortable, and we loved it.

TAYLOR SWIFT IN ELIE SAAB AT THE ARIA AWARDS

Taylor Swift knows what she likes. The singer is a huge fan of two colors on the red carpet dress: red or neutral/sand colors. We've seen Tay in so many white, pale pink, and beige dresses it's hard to tell them apart sometimes, but it was her recent outing to Australia's Aria awards that had us wiping the sweat off our brow, and making sure we were in fact looking at Ms. Swift herself. The cut of the ultra-feminine, ballerina-esque gown was also no surprise, but the va-va-voom effect that the low neckline and fitted bodice had were certainly something we hadn't been expecting. Sugary sweet this dress was not, and the sheer panels in the back added to the overall feeling of daring. It's been a huge year for Tay, both on and off the carpet, and we cannot wait to see her take more sartorial risks in 2013.

RIHANNA IN EMILIO PUCCI AT THE BATTLESHIP PREMIERE

After the year she's had, Rihanna MUST be tired. Is that a reason to wear your PJ's on the carpet? Well actually, we say absolutely yes, and especially if those PJ's are Pucci. Ri stepped out onto the carpet at the premiere for Battleship in a fresh off the runway Pucci pajama suit, barely there sandals, and a sleek side parted hairstyle. It certainly didn't look like she had just rolled out of bed or anything, but there was certainly something very Sunday morning about the look. Do we wish our Sunday mornings were as chic as this? Totally. Do we dig this look for the carpet? Absolutely.

ZAC EFRON IN GUCCI AT THE LUCKY ONE PREMIERE

Zac Efron LOOOOVES his shiny Gucci suits. The actor broke out killer look after killer look on the press tour for his film The Lucky One, but there was one in particular that we couldn't get out of our heads. That's right, we're talking about the maroon number he wore to the Berlin premiere, exquisitely cut and paired with a skinny black tie. Maybe it's because oxblood turned out to be THE color of 2012 (sorry Pantone), or it's just because we love to see a guy wear the crap out of a suit. Take notes, boys.

LADY GAGA IN VERSACE AT THE GRAMMYS

While this wasn't a huge year for Lady Gaga red carpet wise, we saw her rock some INCREDIBLE dresses both on stage and on the streets. She even snuck past our radar at The Grammys, but her front-row look was just too good not to include. Gaga slipped past photographers in an out of control custom Versace gown, complete with a gold scepter. Is there anything Gaga can't do? She is your most stylish girl of 2012, after all!
