Listen, we know you’re probably STILL eyeballs deep in holiday shopping right now, and your bank account is weeping uncontrollably with every new swipe of your credit card, but just remember: there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The light’s called “Spring/Summer 2013,” and thanks to our friends at Lil Wayne’s breakout streetwear line, Trukfit, we have more than enough ocular helpings of sneak peek neon and prints and skater steez to tide us over until this collection hits stores in January. We got a special tour of Trukfit’s New York headquarters courtesy of Trukfit’s VP of Merchandising, Frances Wong, Marketing Manager, Mike Morris, and their publicist, Sarah Cunningham, all of whom showed us what’s on the horizon for future seasons of Weezy’s line. Also, they dropped some serious industry knowledge on how Wanye’s ideas become actual, physical clothes, and we nerded out, hanging on every word.

One foot into the Trukfit showroom and you can definitely feel the essence of Lil Wayne permeating every fiber of every garment. It’s awash with eye-bugging colorways, poppy graphics, and prints on prints on print. “A lot of this has to go back with the essence of Wayne himself,” Wong explained, “He goes through all the approval stages from art to sign-offs and even direction on where he would like to go.” The influence of Wayne’s endearingly loud personality and personal style are everywhere as the brand makes moves from mostly graphic tees to a flushed out lifestyle brand with multiple categories, accessories, and even skateboard decks!

We can expect to see the “seafoam beach glass” and “tangerine tango” color stories hit floors January 2013 through February, and a different delivery with more bright limes and hot pinks and a rad all-over misfit face print will make its way into stores from February through March. “A lot of the color palettes are based on trend going forward,” said Wong of the preliminary design process, “The design team here does a lot of research with Pantone with just forecasting trends and market in the skate market, in the street market, even going back to footwear which is essential in the young men’s market. Playing back to the sneakers and what’s going on in colors there.” It probably doesn’t hurt that Wanye also has his toes *ba dum TSH* in the shoe industry. Not a bad deal to be in a position to draft up a new Supra sneaker, then turn around and design some socks to go with it, AMIRITE??

It’s evident from this brief visit that, until now, we hadn’t seen the half of what Trukfit had to offer yet. It’s exploding from tees and hats to outwear and denim and knits and experimenting with textiles and prints, giving more room to play with all of the style range Lil Wayne brings to the table. Wong explained that the raglans, a noted best seller for the up-and-coming brand, are coming back this season but in a richer marl (rather than a heather), and the Martian and Tommy screens will continue to be carried over as brand icons. This time around, though, they’re playing with more of a heavy-metal inspiration on the font work, citing Slayer specifically. Additional prints are also new this go-around. “Wayne, he can wear anything, you know?” Frances said, “So with him, it’s going from whimsical with the dots all the way into a tiger print or a leopard print. He really gives us a lot to work with which has been great. When you walk in on a young men’s floor, you don’t see this from everybody, so we really have stood out.”

One of the most interesting things about Trukfit is its ability to transcend genres and even genders (though Morris revealed they’re working on women’s AND kids’ arms for the brand come 2013!!) with everyone from Rihanna to Pierce The Veil to The Game repping Wayne’s line. Our theory is that its inherent outrageousness throws whatever music you listen to or scene you identify yourself with out the window and makes it more about the personality of its wearer. BUT it’s worth noting that they also offer some great staples if you focus hard enough.

Wong and Morris shed a little light on the Trukfit design calendar which is more than 9 months ahead of what’s out right now. “It’s early,” said Wong, “We’re actually a little late right now, but we should be on Holiday of 2013.” *does double-triple-take, looks at watch* Duhhhh, WHAT. Aren’t we in the middle of Holiday 2012 right NOW?? Wong elaborated on the team’s utilization of Wayne’s stylist, Marisa Flores, who helps to explain Wayne’s vision and the kinds of things he’s into at any given moment, but of course, they do their own research, too. “We look at all avenues,” she added, “We even look at women’s! Women’s printed jeans happened two years ago. Women’s colored jeans happened two years ago in the junior’s market. And now it’s kind of quiet, you see it out there for $19.99, $14.99, but two years ago, that was the hottest thing. Well, now that’s transcending into men’s. Prints and leopards and all that, that’s transcending into men’s, too. We look at every angle: trend, couture, street, sneakers, home, everything. Everything that touches your life now is fair game, so we really try to encompass everything and try to do our homework and be able to give Wayne all that information and see what Wayne wants to do with it.” WOW.

We asked the Trukfit crew to call out a few of the pieces that they (and Wanye!) were most excited about for the upcoming collection. They went for what seemed a unanimous first choice: a pair of French terry (a.k.a. sweatshirt material) shorts in robin’s egg blue covered with a graphic star print. What makes these so special? THEY GLOW IN THE DARK. *mind blown* According to them, Wayne’s excited about them, too, and has already been wearing them out! They also shouted out the Trukfit drawers which have been a major vehicle for brand exposure given Wayne’s propensity for shirtlessness and sagging. Fun Fact: the bucket hat (scroll up, up, up!) was a special request add from Weezy which I think is AWESOME and definitely on-trend (*achem* paging Earl Sweatshirt), but if you’re asking MEEEEE, my favorite piece is hands down this neon letterman jacket (see below)! *swooooons, hoards away all the loose cash in my wallet* Which piece are YOU eyeing from Trukfit’s next collection? Let us know in the comments below!
