It seems that people still can’t stop talking about Kanye West’s Givenchy
skirt kilt from the 12-12-12 concert last week—even though he wore a super similar kilt-over-leather-pants ensemble during his Watch the Throne tour last year. Just when Yeezy decided to resurface the custom Riccardo Tisci look, a video chronicling the backstage process behind his debut kilt outfit also came to light. Somehow we missed KILLER behind-the-scenes footage of Ye and his stylist Renelou Padora trying to perfect his pleated kilt, and we’re kicking ourselves for not finding it sooner. (Thanks, Complex!)
Renelou describes her process behind creating Kayne’s look saying, “Really it’s Riccardo Tisci’s vision and Givenchy, so I don’t want to take too much away from what his vision was. But I know from the meeting that Riccardo, Virgil [Abloh] and Kanye had in Paris, he just knew that he should be wearing a kilt.” The video shows Kanye and his team discussing the ensemble in incredible detail, and one part even shows Kanye getting on his knees to cut the Givenchy kilt himself! #dedication Renelou continued, “We just kind of went with the flow. We really didn’t know what was going to arrive in the box until we were in Birmingham. We opened it up and out came these amazing pieces that were just made for Kanye and Jay-Z. It took awhile, but push came to shove and out came the leather pants and the kilt.” Hours of talking, cutting, and futzing later, Kanye stares at his finished product in the mirror and says, “I just love this. I mean, I like it if I wear a kilt or I’m not wearing a kilt. I just like the silhouette—it’s really modern.”
