5 Years Of Justin Bieber’s Christmas Style: A Retrospective

As much as we’d love to bestow unto the Internet a complete history of Justin Bieber’s Christmas morning outfits from the snowflake-covered baby buntings to the superhero footie pajamas (these are merely educated guesses), but at this point, we just don’t have access to those resources. (*ACHEM* A little help, Scooter Braun? *wink wink nudge nudge*) While we wait for the fateful day those pictures turn up on our doorstep, here’s a retrospective on the pictures of Justin Bieber’s Christmas performance outfits that we DO have!

It, of course, all starts with YouTube. Bieber’s Christmas stage looks go as far back as his kidrauhl account. And this old school video and recording of Stevie Wonder’s “Someday At Christmas” is just about as iconically BIEBER as “Baby.” What did J.Biebs wear for his premier Christmas cover? A black backwards fitted cap, an oversized denim jacket with a red t-shirt underneath, and a pair of black track pants.

Enter “Bieber Hair.” In two short years, Justin catapults from YouTube to Christmas in Washington. He’s singing the very same song, but this time, it’s for President Obama and his family and guests. And he’s wearing a purple button-up and tie under a cashmere v-neck sweater with dark jeans and grey sneakers.

Justin makes his Jingle [insert synonym for “party” here] debut in a monochromatic outfit of a white drawstring cowl neck t-shirt, slim jeans, and white velcro sneakers. Oh, also black fingerless gloves and a black bandana tied around his left bicep.

And then, Bieber recorded a Christmas album. The full-length record wasn’t released until November 1, 2011, but he prefaced it with a Christmas original: “Mistletoe.” In the music video, wears a black leather jacket with furry lining and ribbed knit sleeves while he sneaks in a little ad for his Someday perfume. Oh, and the fingerless glove thing holds over from 2010.

It looks like Bieber went for an “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” motto for his 2011 Bambi Awards outfit, carrying over that all-white performance outfit from 2010. This time, he goes for more of an eggshell, off-white. And he trades in the cowl neck for a jacket collar big enough to hide snacks in.

Collars stay big in 2011, but this time, Justin’s wearing a vest. Also, maybe channeling Michael Jackson circa the band jacket era? More likely, this homage is to straight-up drum majors à la Little Drummer Boy.

This is one of our favorites from the canon of Bieber Christmas togs. It’s a varsity jacket with leather raglan sleeves and a fairisle body. A kind of updated ugly Christmas sweater but not ugly. We only got to see it once, and if there’s a look we’re begging Biebs to bring back, it’s this one.

The band jacket, on the other hand, stays running on all cylinders for 2011, making another appearance for a performance at Disney World in front of the Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle.

Justin released a music video for his version of “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town,” and released it at the end of the 2011 holiday movie release Arthur Christmas. He was wearing this robo glove. The steampunk community offered mixed reviews.

Bieber was invited BACK to Christmas in Washington to sing once again for the Obamas. Instead of “Someday At Christmas,” he sang a medley of “Mistletoe” and “Away in a Manger.” Instead of a shirt, tie, and sweater, he wore a Dolce & Gabbana suit with a satin contrast shawl collar. #swaggy

The denim shirting here is very reminiscent of Justin’s OG kidrauhl video, but he borrows a page from Jason Mraz’s book and swaps out the black fitted for a tweedy fedora.

Bieber’s stance and sheepish grin here say it all. “This shade of green makes this Christmas-y, right???” Pfffffft, I guess since it’s so close to the actual day, we’ll let it slide… This also marks the fourth instance of fingerless gloves in this retrospective.

Justin makes his 2012 holiday season debut at this year’s Rockefeller Center tree lighting in a black-and-gold, zippered, funnel collared jacket. It’s double-breasted with giant gold medallion buttons, and on his hands? *drumrolllll* Fingerless gloves again. This outfit REEKS of nostalgia for Christmas past, and we’re sooooo into it.

Here’s something we haven’t seen before: Justin Bieber in an all-black outfit for a holiday performance. You know what else we haven’t seen before? That laced up lattice situation on Bieber’s t-shirt. We’re all for Justin’s propensity for matching, but maaaaaybe that much mirroring (like, to his sneakers) is just a little too far.

If we didn’t already know this was Justin’s second Jingle Ball performance this week, we’d have no idea, based on these outfits alone that Bieber was singing for a holiday event. This very leather, very drop-crotch steez isn’t exactly unique to the yuletide. We might be able to fudge with the red and white, candy-striper color scheme for his stage ensemble, but even that is a stretch. Is this the end of The Biebs’s love affair with festive wear? Let us know what you think and which of these is your favorite Bieber holiday look in the comments below!
