When Azealia Banks stepped out in her jelly sandals this summer, she singlehandedly convinced us that you don’t need to be Kelly Kapowski wannabe in order to get in on the ’90s staple. The trend is officially back, and there’s no shortage of available options online- Tory Burch, Loeffler Randall, and Valentino currently have ’em up for grabs- but Melissa Shoes has built its entire BRAND upon the fantastic plastic footwear. In other words, this Brazilian label (whose motto is “Plastic Dreams,” BTW) knows what it’s doing as far as the resurrected childhood trend is concerned…and now it’s nabbed Karl Lagerfeld to design FOUR new collections. Between rocking out with Frank Ocean and, you know, creating his own brands, The Kaiser has somehow found time to craft some jelly kicks for Spring 2013.

He’s following in the footsteps (heh) of previous Melissa collaborators like Vivienne Westwood, Gareth Pugh and Jason Wu, and we have NO doubt Karl will stamp his collections with his own extravagant touch. A plastic version of the chunky heels that stomped down the runway last season? A Choupette-inspired flat? Hey, cat shoes are having a moment…

We’ll have to wait until March to get a firsthand glimpse of Karl Lagerfeld’s debut capsule collection for Melissa. But until then, Karl, we just have one request: can Azealia Banks be the face of the collab? Please?
