Justin Bieber isn’t exactly known for having a “safe” sense of style. From drop-crotch sweatpants to cat tank tops, The Biebs will find a way to experiment with fashion no matter the occasion. INCLUDING (as we discovered this weekend via Instagram) when meeting and receiving awards from esteemed government officials. That’s right, folks. The image above depicts a one Mr. Justin Bieber clad in a backwards TI$A snapback, white t-shirt, chains, bright yellow sneakers, and *drumrollll* RAILROAD-STRIPED OVERALLS. And the guy next to him? That’s Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper who just honored Biebs with one of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medals. The risky outfit caught a bit of fire in the blogosphere, but we can’t say Bieber didn’t see it coming.

Along with tweeting the above (a portmanteau of overalls and KidRauhl, Justin’s OG YouTube account that catapulted him into the superstar he is today), Bieber also Instagrammed a mirror shot of the outfit with the caption, “I hope you hate my style,” all before the media even caught wind of his dungarees. Suffice it to say he got what he hoped for as the Internet erupted with opinions (mostly negative) on his denim look. One Daily Mail article in particular caught his eye, spurring his own direct response as Bieber took to Instagram to defend his overalls against Daily Mail writer Hayley Peterson’s “Would a suit hurt, Justin?” headline.

Justin took a screenshot of the article and added his own comment via Instagram caption saying, “The pic of me and the Prime Minister was taken in a room in the arena where i was performing at that day. I walked straight from my meet and greet to him, if you ’Hayley’ expect me to have a change of clothes let a loan a suit at that specific time that’s crazy, It wasn’t like it was like I was going into his environment we were at a hockey arena. Wow am i ever white trash hayley peterson lol” While the whole “White Trash Prince” thing actually originates from this Gawker piece and we recognize Peterson may have been unfortunately caught in the crossfire on that particular point, we have to give Bieber props for standing behind his sartorial decision. Overalls are not an easy thing to pull off (unless, of course, you’re Alexa Chung), and it’s worth noting that if you’re going to brave wearing them, you should also be prepared to defend them.
