Katy Perry wearing her Free People denim jacket with sweater sleeves in New York City.
We may spend a lot of time talking about Katy Perry’s performance and red carpet style, but don’t think we don’t know that the singer has some killer street style game as well. She may be a fan of outrageous hair and killer nails, but Katy also goes casual sometimes, but she’s always totally on trend. Most recently we’ve seen her wearing the crap out of one of our favorite trends, which is the classic denim jacket with a twist: sweater sleeves. In a sea of leather–be it denim and leather hybrids or straight up Grease style biker jackets–the denim jacket is a staple that can be endlessly customized to fit the wearers personal style. We could go on for days about acid wash and paint and embroidery, but today, it’s the sweater sleeve that we’re most interested in. Katy’s particular jacket, which incorporates not only sweater sleeves but also bleach spots and fraying, is Free People’s ’Cypress’ Denim Sweater Sleeve Jacket, and you can buy it from Nordstrom for $198. There are a number of more wallet friendly options after the jump, and we’ll also tell you the super easy way to hack this trend with things you might already have in your closet.
Urban Outfitters has a number of denim jackets with sweater sleeves.

Just like Katy, Urban Outfitters is always on trend. Whenever we start to spot something emerging on the streets, Urban is one of our first stops in our hunt to make it ours. It’s also often right in that sweet spot of still quality, but also not too hard on our bank accounts. For a cozier look, we love the Urban Renewal Sweater Sleeve Denim Jacket for $79.00. It comes in two possible sleeve patterns, our favorite being navy with oxblood and white polka dots. We also LOVE that this topper is anchored to a classic Levi’s denim jacket. It adds a classic touch to a new trend. Also available from Urban is the BDG X The Reformation Blanket Sleeve Trucker Jacket, also for $79. Now, The Reformation is a boutique brand that merges pretty with goth, wearable with directional, and so their collab with Urban is right up our alley. Their jacket features a more weathered, sandblasted denim trunk and geometric blanket sleeves. We also love the attention to detail in this one–they even used the blanket fabric on the collar!
Another option is a hooded sweater sleeved jacket, or one in a busy pattern.
If you’re looking for a more all weather, surfer babe look, the Billabong Rev Up Jacket, for $98, is just the ticket. With a cozy knit and a hood, this jacket is a close cousin to the built-in-hoodie jacket, a practical option for the more hood-inclined among us. it features a sandblasted wash and classic denim front, and is a much more casual, laid back iteration of this trend. Finally, we have Katy’s Free people jacket, which has a nice mix of punky accents in the bleached out and frayed spots, and cozy southwestern flair, with warm colors and cozy sleeves. Of course, you can also always hack this trend, combining the ubiquitous denim vest with any of your favorite sweaters. Choose a cardigan if you’re going to be wearing the jacket open, or a pull over if you’re going to be buttoning up, covering your front with a big scarf, or don’t mind if people can tell you’re trend-hacking.
