Ever since the velvet manicure popped into our radar in early 2012, we couldn’t WAIT to try out the fuzzy stuff. Ciaté released a set at Sephora that comes in burgundy, navy and gray, which is perfect for fall, but after taking it for a spin, we kind of, um, wanted to turn it up a notch. We are, after all, total nail art FIENDS, so it’s hard for us to stick to one solid color on all of our tips. All it takes is a little flocking powder (which you can find at any local craft store or all over the internetz) sprinkled over some wet polish, and TA-DA! Velvet mani ideas for dayyysss. Let’s check out some of our favorite furry inspiration from around the interwebs, shall we?
CHANNEL YOUR FAVE FUZZY MONSTER
Via Pixel’s Polish
When it comes to furry monsters (or muppets), there’s no shortage of of hairy beasts that can be transformed into nail art on your tips. (PLEASE peep this xoJane Cookie Monster mani if you haven’t already.) The gal behind Pixel’s Polish wanted to bring her favorite Pixar characters to life by making a 3D homage to the terrifying twosome from Monsters, Inc.. She did teal and purple flocking powder polka dots on the majority of her tips, but left one accent finger open for a detailed homage to that oh-so-famous single green eye. Perf!
TAKE TRADITIONAL NAIL ART TO HAIRY NEW HEIGHTS
When it comes to velvet manicures, the options are endless, so if you start with a go-to nail art design (like the half moon, seen above), just get some flocking powder to match the base coat, and you’re good to go! Here a model shows off her bright blue tips backstage at Ruffian’s F/W/ 2012 show. Lucky for us, MAC recreated this look in a RTW version that you can snatch up right here!
DON’T PLAY BY THE RULES
Via The Daily Nail
Don’t get tricked by the name “velvet manicure”—you can do your digits up in ANYTHING that has a fuzzy feeling, including, yes, even a poker table. We love how The Daily Nail did an homage to Las Vegas nightlife with bright green tips complete with poker chip half moons. Jackpot!
MIX UP THE FUZZ
Via I Am Necole
When it comes to flocking powder, don’t be scared to mix it up! Fade together two complementary shades for a beautiful ombre shade that had a soft (literally) 3D effect.
EXPLORE NEW TURF
Football season just started, so we totally have sports on the brain—well, kind of. We just noticed that bright green flocking powder would be PERFECT for recreating astroturf-type nail art on our fingers, and we love what The Daily Varnish has done with their football-themed design.
BONUS: STICK NAIL DECALS ON TOP
This weekend even WE gave the velvet manicure a try by creating a bold rainbow design across all of our tips. (Note: We admittingly already have every shade of polish in the rainbow in our possession, but we purchased the flocking powder here.) Just when we thought THAT was blowing our mind, we tried to see if we could stick nail decals atop the fuzzy stuff (here we used Rad Nails’ Cut It Out set), and it totally worked! What we were left with was a totally amazing mani that we can’t stop touching.
