Heavy Metal Is Trending At Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week

We came, we saw, we conquered New York Fashion Week! While our Fashion (yes, with a capital F) high is still going strong, this means it's THE perfect time to round up some of our favorite trends fresh from the runways. We all know that the fashion world is a pendulum, meaning the popular looks one year will probably resurface a few seasons later. Although what's old may be new again, expect some totally modern twists for Spring 2013. Case in point: metallics. These guys probably already take up prime real estate in your closet, which is good news- because they're here to stay. Chalk it up the the Olympics or the classic American obsession with extravagance, but designers like Jeremy Scott, Rodarte, Rachel Zoe and more have added their own edge to traditional golden, silver, and bronze this season with sequins, chain links, and statement solid pieces. Yep, the Gilded Age is officially back!

OK, so Diane Von Furstenberg, Jill Stuart, and Falguni & Shane Peacock took a relatively classic approach to the trend with allover sequins and sparkles. But before you roll your eyes and yawn, hold up! This trio added their own signature touches, whether it's muted metallics like DVF, a disco ball gown from Jill Stuart, or a rad futuristic number from Falguni. They're bold, bright. and sparkle up a storm. In other words, these definintely aren't your grandmother's party dresses.

Ryan Lochte may have us beat in the medal territory, but we've found a way to get our own gold accessory (no, we're not talking about grills). If you don't want to sport head-to-toe shine, then take cues from these designers above with key metallic pieces- trust us, they're equally as eye catching. We're already mildly obsessed with Marchesa's gorgeously intricate frocks (wedding dress, anyone?) and this season Georgina Chapman took it to another level with gold blocking on her trademark girly gowns. Then there's Karen Walker, who showed skirts and tops covered in harvest gold with a boxy cut and a glimmering sheen. We love how the deep color keeps them chic (not tawdry) and updates the metal trend in a way that's current and 100% fresh. Another designer adding some edge is Phillip Lim, who looked to the '90s with his grunge-inspired collection. Whereas downtown mainstays like graphic "I <3 Nueva York" tees and head-to-toe florals snagged the spotlight, it's the mirrored and cracked golden tote bags that are lingering in our memories.

Oh heyy chain links! The music industry mainstay on Rihanna, Lil Wayne, and Gaga made a seriously unexpected cameo on the runway for Spring 2013. The Rodarte girls used delicate metal chains to embellish their gowns, Jeremy Scott added a punky edge to his corset dress, and Rachel Zoe took the most subdued approach of them all with thin gold chain detailing. Here's hoping pop stars take note of these awesome outfits for their next red carpet appearance, because RiRi, that Jeremy Scott number is CALLING.YOUR.NAME.
