Forget fashion week, it was Shark Week at The Blonds where the high-camp, high-glamour from the tow-haired duo, Phillipe and David Blond, took a turn for the aquatic. The front row was, as always, a spectacle with Paris Hilton, Adam Lambert and Rico the Zombie Boy (clad in last season’s motorcycle ensemble) chatting amicably and posing for photos. So. Much. FACE.

The procession of hard-bodied models began with the customary beading, sequins and ultra-snug bodices that have made the line so popular for starlets and stylists alike. Hair was teased, platinum and sprouting from retro swimcaps—an update on the Iggy Azalea-esque ponytails attached motorcycle helmets from last season—and the clothes were body-con and abbreviated. One bodysuit that flaunted a distinctly mermaid-ish vibe that included a smattering of beads that evoked the appearance of nipples.

There was latex, sparkles and sequins, with tanks and leggings showcasing a trompe l’oeil pattern of gleaming, bulbous pearls. All was sunny and upbeat until a dramatic hush descended upon the room as lights dimmed to the first strains of the Jaws theme. Phillipe lingered at the runway entrance ensconced in shadow until a flick of a switch revealed a giant, bejeweled crimson shark maw on her torso.

The following latex briefs and bathing suits were humorously covered in pop-art teeth marks and tiny shark fins jutting out of accessories. The final look—a definite wedding dress of sorts—was a head-to-toe, white, beaded, creation that would have been perfect for prom queen in Back To The Future’s “Enchantment Under The Sea Dance.” Seapunk lives!

After the fun-filled event, we popped backstage with the two to talk about their upcoming Blond Diamond Barbie (Phillipe took her final bow in a dress that featured the Mattel collaboration, and the Pink Diamond Barbie is currently up for auction), the inspiration for the collection and mused over how one half of the creative couple always seems to portray a scary monster in their shows. What ever could it mean?
