After Marc Jacobs took us on a journey to the days of the mods with his namesake show last night, we were waiting not-so-patiently for the reveal of Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2013 at New York Fashion Week today. The collection always produces some of the most covetable pieces of the season, and is usually a slightly more whimsical and wearable take on the Marc Jacobs collection show. This season was no different–we saw echoes of Marc’s stripes and bold patterns, but everything from the shapes, to the colors, to the textures was youthful and fun in the way his previous night’s show was grown up and clean. The stripes, which we saw on suits and trenches at Marc Jacobs, were reinvented in slightly softer tones for Marc by Marc, and put on dresses and men’s button downs. It was great. But that’s not the most important thing we have to discuss here, oh no. We need to talk about scarves.

Marc by Marc has, in all honesty, totally changed the way we think about scarves. The designer put them on models’ heads, around their waists, and of course around their necks, and sometimes even all three places at once. The most interesting use of the scarf, we thought, was the way that he slung them over their hips. This was no scarf-as-belt situation, either–the way that Marc arranged the scarves made them seem more like a layered peplum, adding dimension and heft to dresses and skirts. There was something very urban runaway about the collection, probably because the layers and layers of heavy fabrics seemed a little carry all your clothes on your back to us, and also because you know what else you can do with a scarf? Use it as a bag tied at the end of a pole, in which you carry your belongings. That said, we totally want to runaway immediately if it means we can look this good. The color palette was super rich, with blues, reds and electric pinks intermingling with muted earth tones. There was a big socks and sandals thing happening, as well, including the dreaded flip flops and socks (no comment). That aside (and even the socks and flip flops looked pretty good), we thought the collection was just what we needed to inject some MAJOR color into our lives, and it will definitely serve as a source of inspiration, before spring 2013 has even arrived.
