Can you believe it’s only been a year now that fashion-forward retail giant J.Crew has been showing at New York Fashion Week? Yes, it’s only been 365 days (well, roughly) since the Jenna Lyons/Mickey Drexler match-up made its Lincoln Center debut. (And though J.Crew has shown exclusively via presentation and not runway show thus far, that hasn’t stopped MEGASTARS like Miss Beyonce Knowles) from showing support. And judging from the brand’s marked evolution of the collections from season to season while still keeping true to the J.Crew signatures (namely excellent tailoring and a massive sucker punch of color), it’s not hard to see why.
This Spring 2013 showing is a riot of tropical neons and super lively prints but all controlled by the hallmark J.Crew attention to silhouette – that classic, preppy tailored look. Also, some serious candy-colored pumps and bags that we’re already writing up with many many underlines on our birthday wishlists (summer babies, HAAAYYYYYY!). Many of the design elements that made last season so striking are carried over for the coming spring/summer, especially the mixed prints, but of course, they’re altered in new ways that push the trend even further. The remixing has become not just about the calculated mish-mashing of patterns but also the juxtaposition of a bold graphic with a floral or a stripe or a houndstooth. It’s cool and refreshing and exactly what this season should be.
