Mini MTV Style history lesson: We’ve been obsessed with designer Asher Levine since we first chatted him up back in 2010. The then-22 year old was already designing outfits for Lady Gaga (HUGE!), and just last year he collabed with Mother Monster’s fashion director Nicola Formichetti on a line of tees that sold at his pop-up shop in Soho. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, spring 2013 fashion week hit, and we found ourselves on yacht (yeah, a YACHT) with Asher himself discussing all the deets behind his latest fashion show—which, lucky for us, would include a live performance by one of our hip-hop faves, Le1f!

When we asked Asher to describe his spring 2013 collection, he said it was “undefinable,” and after seeing all the ensembles, we have to agree! Some outfits took on an extraterrestrial feel with caps created to look like alien heads, while others exuded a grunge-meets-’80s-Beetlejuice vibe. The looks varied from flowy, layered post-apocalyptic pieces to extremely sculpted menswear silhouettes. We were in total awe of his entire collection, and when we asked him to give us more deets behind the designs, he said he included “shapes that accentuate the human form in ways that you would look at it and not understand what it means. Then we take those shapes and the textures and we distill it in various ready-to-wear looks.” Ah-ha!

While the models strutted their stuff on the runway, NYC-based rappers Le1f and Don Jones also performed their customized 8-minute track on the catwalk for the ULTIMATE NYFW show. If you haven’t already heard of Le1f, get yourself up to speed by listening to his music below OR watching his latest music video. I meannnn, it’ll be impossible not to fall in love with him.
