Unlike Christian Siriano’s dark and vampy fall 2012 collection, his spring 2013 runway was filled with tons of light pink, baby blue and seafoam green pastel pieces that screamed summer. His line included everything from work-ready pearl-accented peplum dresses to button-up brocade jumpsuits to flowy landscape print frocks. Between the tutu silhouettes, soft high buns, and blaring remixed classical music during the show, the inspiration behind the collection was clear—it was ALL about the ballet. When we caught up with Christian backstage, he told us this season’s looks were about being “romantic and pretty” and inspired by the American Ballet Theatre’s Dream Ballet. “It’s kind of an adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream—so very dreamlike, very whimsical,” he said. “The whole collection really has that kind of ballet dancer feeling.” Ah ha! We knew we were onto something.
Christian also said his graphic prints were even based off of Edgar Degas paintings of ballerinas and, of course, so was the beauty look. “The hair and makeup is kind of like the girl did her own bun before going into her dress rehearsal. We really went for it.” Our favorite part, though, HAS to be the shoes. Christian took the famous point shoe and revamped it into his spring shoe collection by adding tons of ribbon to the back of his pumps. Also, he (for the first time ever!) included a FLAT shoe on the runway—a killer oxford that comes in metallic pink and beige printed polka dot design. CA-UTE.
