We're BIG fans of Mara Hoffman at MTV Style. The bright colors (even in the gloomier months!), the printed realness, the brain-petting symmetry - it's all totally our steez. And with her bringing in a varied crowd from Queen B Lil Kim, to her BFF Pamela Love, to our bb gurl Holland Roden, her designs are clearly widely appreciated. Naturally, her New York Fashion Week shows are hotly anticipated events for our entire staff. This season, with its luxe cording appliques, flirty cuts, and fresh Polynesian inspiration, was no exception. PLUS, there were Ukelele girls!

The string trio, clad in palm frond hair accessories to match the models, was assembled by the show's DJ Ben Brunnemer who's been doing the music for Mara's shows for years. "This season we had the live element of the Ukuele girls," Brunnemer explains, "so my production partner Kendall Nash and I put together the band, and then, Mara and I picked a song for them to learn that would fit with her Hawaiian inspiration for the collection." The soundtracking is a collaborative process for Ben and Mara. "She and I work together on picking the music," he says, "and then, I will edit and mix the songs to make them work on the runway. Since we've been working together for so long, we have a very good working vibe." And it shows!

The runway soundtrack (which you can listen to here!) opens with the steel drum-heavy "Far Nearer" by Jamie XX and leads into Cat Power's airy "Manhattan," a track from her new album Sun. After that, magentas and corals and turquoises parade down the runway to Rainbow Arabia, Pixies, and finally, the presentation wraps fittingly with a Harry Belafonte calypso classic.
