From ‘Mean Girls’ To ‘Bachelorette,’ Lizzy Caplan’s Style Evolution

Recognize her or not, chances are you can quote Lizzy Caplan. Back in ’05 she starred as Janis Ian, otherwise known as the most quotable character in THE most quotable movie ever, Mean Girls. While we’ll forever think of Lizzy as the hilarious gothy outcast (“You smell like a baby prostitute!”), the actress has definitely come a long way since her Regina George-hating days. She’s starred in movies like Hot Tub Time Machine, on TV in Party Down, and, most recently, gets white dress fever in not one but TWO wedding flicks- Save the Date and Bachelorette. Her wardrobe has also taken a turn over the years, swapping out flowy maxidresses, halter minis and bleach blonde hair (!) for sleek fashion-forward numbers by designers like Dolce & Gabbana. In other words, Lizzy’s epic style evolution is totally begging for a trip down memory lane…so what are we waiting for? Let’s do this!

Lizzy’s been hitting the press circuit hard this month to promote her new bridesmaid comedy Bachelorette, and she’s repping the part of a movie star perfectly in simple and sophisticated outfits. Just this week she worked a cream spaghetti-strap bustier dress by Dolce & Gabbana, which she paired with nude Stella McCartney sandals and a fresh red lip. While attending the film’s premiere in Switzerland, she wore an emerald green silk Issa London dress as well as a colorful tropical print number by Lisa Ho. We love her casual, just-rolled-out-of-bed long bob coupled with fresh-faced beauty. It’s a far cry from Janis Ian’s kohl-rimmed eyes and side barrettes, but hey…maybe that’s a good thing?

The post-Mean Girls, pre-Bachelorette Lizzy Caplan era has been an eclectic one fashion-wise. The actress has channeled everything from dressed-down cool at Sundance ( black leather pants, suede booties, a button-down and a velvet blazer) to vampy Hollywood PYT at the Hot Tub Time Machine premiere in 2010 (flirty gold minidress, slick bun, and black pumps). In 2007 she went boho in a long coral printed minidress- a staple look she’s repeated several times over the years.

Now we’re digging through the dark depths of Lizzy C. style history, way back in the days when she was just another emerging actress. Soon after Mean Girls debuted, she hit the red carpet in key Hollywood up-and-comer pieces like strapless cocktail dresses and silk halter frocks….all topped off with beachy dark blonde hair. She looks SO different here that we had to do a double-okay, triple– take just to make sure this was the same deadpan actress we know and love (it is). Her style may have shifted over the years, but let’s be honest: Lizzy Caplan’s wisecracking humor definitely hasn’t. Want proof? Just watch her in Bachelorette, available to rent on iTunes now. And in the meantime, tell us which Lizzy Caplan look you like the best!
