Gwen Stefani Plays Opposites For ‘Harper’s Bazaar’

Chalk it up to her SoCal upbringing or unofficial membership to the boys’ club (which you get when you’re the only girl in an all-dude band), but Gwen Stefani doesn’t normally do pink. Black tank tops? Sure. Baggy printed pants? Obviously. But Barbie pink? Not so much. However, the musician, designer and mom goes high fashion in the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar, working designers like Oscar De La Renta, Alexander McQueen, and Jil Sander, and, not so shockingly, totally kills it. This is the lady who singlehandedly convinced us to buy an animal print suit, after all. But proving that she hasn’t ditched her low-maintenance roots entirely, Gwen completes the couture dresses with a messy topknot and gorgeous, everyday makeup. See?! In this case, opposites really DO attract.

The September issue is traditionally the largest and most important edition in the publishing world, and Gwen proves she’s right up there with fellow cover girls like Lady Gaga for VOGUE and Katy Perry for ELLE. Oh, and did we mention this is the biggest issue of Bazaar in HISTORY? No big deal or anything. Just check out the cover, where she’s working a pale pink Jil Sander gown and an Alexis Mabille Couture hat (yes, she same one Ms. Perry wore back in February). We love how she’s traded her signature red lipstick for a brighter pink … paired with a cateye, the result is a glammed-up version of her “Settle Down” video beauty.

In the feature, shot by Terry Richardson, Gwen hopscotches from ruffly gowns to a sleek leather dress to a bright fuchsia Diane Von Furstenberg jumpsuit. It might a little bit all over the place (in the best way possible, obviously) but this spread’s the picture-perfect portrayal of No Doubt ringleader’s fearlessly eclectic style. Bottom line: grown-up Gwen has definitely come a loooong way since her adorable barrette-wearing, athletic pants days, but she’s still a rockstar through and through. Relive the ’90s magic in her House of Style cameo below, and buy the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar when it hits stands August 21st.
