Kimbra Is A Rising Style Star

It’s been a while since Gotye’s “Somebody That You Used to Know” first burst upon the music scene and subsequently wormed its way into our eardrums (and hearts, obviously). But even months later after its debut, the Aussie superstar’s breakup anthem is still firmly wedged into our consciousness. We owe part of this to Kimbra, the New Zealand songbird who lends her massive pipes to the chorus- and transforms the song from a heartache-y saga to a bold, empowering, ode to independence. Now that her debut album Vows has finally hit stateside, it’s about time that Kimbra steps out on her own and get the solo recognition she deserves. Oh, and it should go without saying that her fashion sense is equally noteworthy. The 22-year-old has set herself apart from the rest of the pop star pack, skipping the leotards and leather and instead opting for girly dresses, flouncy skirts, and MAJOR fabric volume. Whether it’s lace, feathers, chiffon, mirrors, or sequins, Kimbra likes to make a serious statement without showing tons of skin.

Thanks to her arsenal of crazy graphic prints (bananas, anyone?) and skirts poofy enough to make ALL the Disney princesses jealous, Kimbra’s definitely not afraid to show her fashion colors-literally. Although her taste in fabrics and patterns is all over the place, a quick trip through Kimbra’s style history shows she sticks with a similar silhouette onstage. Instead of skintight bandage dresses, she chooses shorter frocks with a tight (often strapless) top and a tutu-esque skirt. Not only is it an attention-grabbing fashion choice, but it’s a practical one as well- dancing onstage is much easier when you have leg room to, you know, actually move. Makes sense, huh?

Kimbra has enough vintage swag to make anyone jealous- she’s been known to perform in $20 thrifted dresses- but turns out Kimbra’s a huge supporter of local designers as well. She repped Australian Jaime Lee at the ARIA Awards last year (the Australian version of the Grammy’s), wearing not one but two of her dresses. Lee crafted the frocks especially for the singer, whom she told Pedestrian TV “loves a party dress and lots of colour and texture.” It’s an appropriate description, considering Kimbra turns pretty much any show into a full-on dance fest… and the audience is invited.

There’s been a definite trend in designers snatching music ingenues like Lana del Rey, Azealia Banks, and Iggy Azalea for fash-forward projects, so we’re going to go ahead and call it now: Kimbra’s next! Stay tuned…
