Beyonce, Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Kanye And More Nominated For 2012 MTV Video Music Awards

One of the many perks of working at MTV Style is that, rather than there just being seasons punctuated by holidays and our birthdays once a year, there are also the annual MTV Video Music Awards! And the time has come! We’ve been mentally preparing for this moment, well, since the dust settled on the 2011 MTV VMAs, and here it is! First of all: Check out the full list of nominees here. Second of all: Start voting! Of course all of our favorite fashion plates were nominated, from Beyonce (Best Female Video, Best Editing) and Katy Perry (Best Female Video, Video Of The Year, Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects), to M.I.A. (Video of the Year, Best Cinematography) and Lana Del Rey (Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction), the ladies and gents (lest we forget Kanye and Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, or Drake, all also nominated) of the MTV VMAs are also some of the most well heeled. We also have just a few first timers nominated, so we wanted to look back at what some of our nominees wore last year, to get you excited for the upcoming red carpet madness. Check out the looks, and then, again, don’t forget to VOTE for your favorites!

The 2011 VMAs were a big year for couples. Between Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber canoodling on the red carpet (cute) to Beyonce announcing her pregnancy with husband Jay-Z (MAJOR cute), love was in the air. Beyonce, who is nominated for Best Female Video for “Love On Top” and Best Choreography for “Countdown,” this year, showed off her baby bump on the red carpet in a stunning draped Lanvin wrap dress. We’re sure she’ll go classic and elegant again this year, being a new mama and all. Meanwhile, Justin Bieber, who is nominated for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video for “Boyfriend” this year, would have won the Weirdest Accessory award, if such a category existed. He took to the red carpet in an outfit reminiscent of Kanye’s 2010 VMAs performance look, but accessorized with an albino snake, which lay curled in the singers hand as he swaggered down the runway. *ugh snakes shudder* Snakes or no, Selena, who is nominated for Best Female Video for “Love You Like A Love Song,” looked incredible whether she was smooching her man or no, in a lacy, elegant Julien Macdonald gown.

It wouldn’t be the VMAs without some wild outfits, and last year, Nicki Minaj brought it. The rapper is nominated for Best Female Video for “Starships” and Best Hip Hop Video for “Beez In The Trap,” and award that she took home last year, but the pressure’s on for Minaj to win the red carpet once again. Resplendent in a far-out, Harajuku meets candy raver pile of sartorial amazingness, Minaj destroyed the 2011 carpet so majorly that her look needed its very own, exhaustive breakdown. On the polar opposite of the fashion spectrum, Adele, who arguably won 2011 in general, not just at the VMAs, and is nominated for Best Cinematography for “Someone Like You” this year, walked the carpet in a sophisticated, simple black dress. It wasn’t all easy, however, because the real beauty of Adele’s toned-down look was that it let her KILLER ultra-long nails really shine. Back to the opposite of understated, Katy Perry took to the carpet in a rainbow sherbert colored Asian-inspired look that did not leave us disappointed, even keeping it real South Pacific with a parasol. 2011 was the year of the accessories, we’re telling you. Not to mention that Perry switched up her outfit, AND HER NAIL ART, mid-show, introducing the world to the now infamous cube hat. Johnny Wujek, we supplicate thee.

So, which nominees will wow us on the carpet this year? We’re sure our fashion standbys will bring their A-game as always, but we CANNOT WAIT to see what the new kids on the block bring to the table–we’re lookin’at you, Best New Artist nominees. Vote for your favorite videos, immediately!
