Daria Is Back For The Summer And We Want You To Get The Look!

Daria and Jane are the coolest girls in school.

Do you feel misunderstood? Do you think the whole world is lame? Do you wear the same outfit every. single. day? Well, there’s someone who understands how you’re feeling and then some. We’re talking, of course, about MTV’s favorite misfit Daria. The show will be back on the air as part of the channel’s summer morning series Retromania, with select episodes airing between 9 AM and 12 PM from July 30th to August 3rd. The show spanned five seasons, so they won’t be showing it from start to finish, but you’ll get enough deadpan delivery and sardonic social commentary to make facing the mall bearable this summer. Born as a Beavis and Butt-head spin-off, Daria is classic MTV at its best (and we swear we’re not just saying that)- funny, smart and with a razor sharp sense of humor. One of the best things about the show was definitely Daria and her bestie Lane’s same-clothes-every-day steeze. Luckily the 90’s are back in a BIG way, so there are plenty of options if you want to get the look! We wish we still had our Doc Martens from back in the day…

The perennial mark of a super cool weirdo is definitely the green army jacket. Daria opted for a more refined, slightly blazer like version with a notched collar and straight silhouette, much like Forever 21’s Longline Utility Jacket ($34.80). Layered over a simple brown tee, like the Unisex Fine Jersey Short Sleeve T-Shirt from American Apparel in Camel ($15.00), the jacket is just the right weight for chilly summer nights or balmy fall days. Daria’s black pleated skirt is a little harder to get just right. Likely an ironic nod to the cheerleaders she so despised, the skirt is longer than a traditional cheering skirt, and, of course, a very non-peppy shade of black. Net-A-Porter has the close to perfect Olen Pleated Crepe Mini Skirt by Isabel Marant, but the hefty $265.00 price tag is a bit of a turn-off. A more wallet-friendly option is this Full Mini Skirt from ASOS, which is a more summer job friendly $41.43. The look is pulled together with a pair of classic 14 eyelet Doc Martens, we like the Vintage 1914’s in Black ($220.00), and of course Daria’s signature round, black glasses. We’re HUGE fans of online spec store Warby Parker, so we would go with the Monroe Revolver in Black Matte. With that, and a biting inner monologue, you’re all set to conquer high school.

Clothes aside, though, a high school girl’s best accessory actually has nothing to do with the clothes on her back or the shoes on her feet. What I mean, of course, is that the most important thing for any beautiful weirdo to have is nothing more than a best friend. Daria’s bestie is Jane Lane, the many-earring sporting, bowl cut rocking artist. Her style is similar to Daria’s, but the two are nothing even close to carbon copies of one another. Rather than a green army jacket, Jane wears a red blazer, like the Silence & Noise Boyfriend Blazer in Light Red from Urban Outfitters ($78.00), layered over a black v-neck sweater with white detailing. We like this Featherweight cotton V-neck sweater from J Crew, because it could take you through multiple seasons with the look (and it’s on sale for $49.50, bonus). On the bottom Jane is rocking a pair of grey skater shorts, which we like to refine a little bit, with these T by Alexander Wang Stretch Cotton Canvas Jean Shorts with Leather Detail (also on sale from My Theresa for $218.00). Since Jane seems to be mastering the art of the cross-seasonal look, she pairs her shorts with opaque black tights, like Free People’s London Opaque Tights in black. Last but not least, of course, are THE BOOTS. Now, we had a pair of 20 eyelet Docs back and the day and so can tell you with complete certainty that these are not for the faint of heart. They take forever to put on and take off, so you have to be committed. If you are, though, they’re totally freaking awesome. We’re into the 1B60 Black Smooth model, which will run you a cool $150.00. Now you’re good to go!
