Channing Tatum on the cover of British “GQ Style.”

Oh, hello, Channing Tatum! How resourceful of you to find the only sunroof in New York that looks (by some bizarro M.C. Escher mind-maneuver that somehow puts you below it and looking up?) square in the middle of my desk area. You know how I love when you pensively watch me go about my afternoon activities through a glossy veneer and… cover lines? *aggressively shakes head, also jowls* Oh, right, nevermind.
As is typical upon first glance at Channing Tatum, the title character of the HOTTLY (yes, with two Ts) anticipated Magic Mike, we’ve been locked into his superhuman-strength bedroomy gaze, and we ALMOST forgot this was just a magazine cover. Channing is British GQ Style’s latest cover boy, and while his upcoming film may have him portraying a present-day male stripper (plus, shirtless Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey *rolls tongue back into skull carpet-style*), this cover spread is a little more Pleasantville than Chippendales.
Hypercolored pastel backdrops and soft, shadow-erasing lighting are the key in this throwback look, but the shoot styling is ripe with retro-fabulousness. It’s in that Americana crewcut hair that’s so true to inspiration, it almost screams of neighborhood barbershop CRAFTSMAN. It’s that lilac cardigan juxtaposed with Channing’s quarterback frame that elicits thoughts of root beer floats and sock hops and a circle of hoop skirts vying for a spot on his arm.
It’s sweet and it’s summery and yet, it’s also totally swoonworthy in a very Elvis Presley kind of way. But also, we kind of want to shake him and say, “Whyyyyy are you still sitting there and staring at me?? Like.. it’s charming, I guess? But seriously, get up, dude. It’s kinda weirding me out.” What do you think of Channing Tatum’s retro British GQ Style cover?
