We know you’ve got your prom game on lock, but are you still fretting over which dress to wear? Can’t find something that feels YOU or stands out from the pack of strapless ball-gowny frills? No worries, we’re not the only ones who agonize about evening dresses, and on occasion we find that pants actually work better (and are soooo much more comfortable). But can you actually wear pants to prom? Of course! The trick is in how you wear them. Whether you’re stepping out in sequin jeans and a sharp jacket all Janelle Monae lady tux style or going for a vampy, structured jumpsuit, there’s no way you can’t make prom pants pop. Here’s how…
We love these AG Adriano Goldschmied Ankle Legging Sequin Pants ($168.75) which are pretty much black jeans in sequin form. We’d rock these with a lace top and short, structured black blazer with an oversized corsage or with dangling punk earrings as seen in our prom accessories guide. Leggings with a bit of embellishment are totally acceptable if you layer them with the right top and accessories. A pair of ASOS Leggings with Metallic Paint Splatters ($36.36) work because they’re dark and glam at the same time. We’d top these as they did in the photo with a flowy black top and sequined bustier underneath for a little WOWZA factor. Accessorize with layered gold necklaces, add bold eyes, dark lips, a sophisticated updo, and some killer heels for the ultimate chic New York evening look. Or you can just let the pants do all the work for you with these BCBG MAX AZRIA Zhara Sequined Pants ($199). Holy sparkletasia! Add a white tank and black leather moto jacket with platforms and disco hair. (#DAZZLING) Need more options? We’ve got ’em.
NOT YOUR BASIC BLACK
If you’re going for a lady tux kind of scenario, it’s best to break up the all-black look with some pattern or texture. Thus, try a pair of James Jeans Twiggy Velveteen Amethyst jeans ($99.99) which have an elevated velvet look and are actually dark purple instead of black. We like these with black heels and a see through black blouse with a lace camisole underneath. Tip it out with a sparkly clutch and cat ears fascinator hat. If you’re going more traditional, try to throw a print in there such as with these Oasis Heart Print Pants ($81.81) which are tailored yet fun with tiny hearts in an op-art kind of print. Add a loose, unbuttoned blouse, statement jewelry and up your beauty game. But if you want to go with a pair of basic black pants, make them not-so-literal by trying ZARA Trousers with Contrasting Ribbon ($59.90) which hint at Adidas track pants. While we totally love the idea of high tops with these bad boys (and are all for sneakers with prom dresses), these would work best with strappy sandal heels like these Topshop Skinny silver Sandal Heels.
Jumpsuits are totally on-trend right now and are mega comfortable. Also, all-black ones are sleek enough for evening. The ASOS Jumpsuit with Structured Shoulder ($99.98) is a super sophisticated one-shouldered wonder. Slightly ’70s and completely glam, we’d stack a bunch of killer bracelets or add one dramatic cuff plus a pair of stacked black wedges to complete the look. For something a little sweeter, try Forever 21’s Sheer Bow Jumpsuit ($24.80) which is deceptively dress-like and edged in a pink silk bow around the bodice and waist. We love a pair of platform heels and blown-out hair with this, too. But for something totally stand-out edgy, we’d go for the ASOS Peplum Jumpsuit ($99.98), which looks magazine-pages-worthy with that contoured neckline and sassy peplum. Go for gold or sparkle heels, a simple necklace and earrings, and make the lips bold. Speaking of boldness, that’s the final ingredient for wearing prom pants, so #JustDoIt!
