How To Wear Sneakers With Your Prom Dress

The slow crawl to the weekend means we’re one step closer to PROM. You’ve given your hairstyle a practice run, secured your dress, selected your accessories, and you’re probably well on your way to locking down the PERFECT pair of shoes to complement it all. But maybe you’re not that stoked on the idea of teetering around on a pair of ortho-murdering stilettos all night? Well, whether you’re just not a heel girl or you’re anticipating a grand footwear switch in the middle of your night out, we’ve compiled an arsenal of sneakers you can wear with whatever prom dress you might be rocking, thanks, in part, to inspiration from three sneaker-and-dress-wearing stylettes: Kristen Stewart, Hailee Steinfeld, and Lil Mama!

Kristen Stewart is kind of the patron saint of sneakers-with-dresses, notorious for changing into a pair of Vans or Converse kicks in the middle of awards shows. She’s also a prime example of how to balance looking pretty AND punky in a dress and sneakers. K.Stew wore a pair of checkerboard Vans slip-ons with her dress, and you can implement the same idea in your prom look by opting for equally bold styles. Go for printed looks like these pink patterned slip-ons from ASOS ($63.63) or these graphic flatform high tops also from ASOS ($54.54). Add some edgy sparkle to your ensemble with these ASOS ($381.76) studded high tops, or add a major pop of color with some neon courtesy of Vans ($45.00). The key here is to keep the silhouette sleek and the upper loud and punchy.

Just because your dress screams PROM, doesn’t mean you have to suffer in sky-high heels all night. Take a cue from Hailee Steinfeld and embrace comfortable kicks with styles that match the glitzy, girly steez of your dress. These floral kicks from Urban Outfitters ($20.00) are spring-ready, featuring a prom-y color palette that will complement a host of dress options. Amp up the glamour with a pair of sequined Vans ($55.00) lo pros that seem almost made for prom. Hardcore fashionistas can get in on the action, too, because (a) sneakers are BIG this season and (b) HELLOOOO, remember Missoni’s Chuck Taylor collab?? Cop a pair of those cute kicks from Converse ($200.00) and give them a MAJOR debut on prom night.

Sneakers don’t only have to be a midnight switch out option, though. We fully advocate arriving to the party in a pair of sick kicks, but you have to commit. Like Lil Mama, incorporate them into the total look, making them as much of a focal point as your dress itself. We advise wearing a short, truncated ballgown style – something super sassy and prom-tastic with lots of tulle. Nike Dunks come in a bajillion different color combinations like these candy-striped ones from Urban Outfitters ($85) or this pretty pastel option from ASOS ($118.16). Of course, ANYTHING Jeremy Scott for adidas, like these adidas Originals JS Instincts, is guaranteed to turn heads.
