Blame it on the dogs or your awkward elementary school days, but collars don't exactly have the best rap. Sure, they're great for prep school uniforms and all, but collared shirts? Not exactly "Fashion" (yes, with a capital F). That is, until Alexa Chung was photographed traipsing around in Peter Pan collar dresses, designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel and Marni showed them on the runway, and we finally came to our senses and realized that collars, particularly those of the detachable variety, are actually kind of amazing. These double-duty accessories can be worn with a lower-cut top as a necklace alternative, with a button-up blouse to fake the real thing, or thrown over a t-shirt for an injection of insta-cool. Bottom line: you need to add a multitasking collar to your wardrobe NOW, and these stylish ladies will show you how to rock it.
Kazia L. of Kaziuta.
21-year-old student Kazia posted this photo literally a day ago, and we still can't get over the girly mashup of the Polish blogger's floral dress and sleek gold collar. Because the neckline of her asymmetrical chiffon frock dips a bit deeper than the collar itself, it adds a touch of bling to her floaty ensemble- plus, it perfectly matches her belt and bracelet!. Is it a collar in the traditional, itchy-uniform sense? No way, it's more like a really cool vintage necklace, which is exactly why we love it.
Olivia L. of Lust For Life
If Los Angeles blogger Olivia looks like she's stepped out of a fashion spread here, it's probably because the 19-year-old actually models on the side. Proving that pastels work all year round, she makes the hue seasonally appropriate with pale yellow American Apparel riding pants, a mint green cardigan, and a white detachable collar from ASOS. The end result is part schoolgirl, part Karl Lagerfeld's Net-a-Porter collection, and wholly awesome.
Morven S. of Cats and Rocking Chairs
24-year-old Scottish post-grad Morven channels '60s icons like Twiggy in her mod-inspired look, pairing a canary-colored H&M top with a pleated silk skirt and bejeweled Pinko collar. She keeps it fresh and modern with a swoopy top-knot, round sunglasses, and duh-iPhone in hand. Add some opaque tights and black leather boots, and you've got yourself the perfect city uniform.
