Rodarte Goes To The Dusty Outback For Fall

We’re rounding the final New York Fashion Week bend and were delighted to be taken on a bit of a road trip courtesy of one of our faves, Rodarte. Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy always put on a heck of a show and let the clothes do all the talking. As much as we love runway show theatrics, sometimes you just want to sit back and be rendered speechless by a truly fantastic collection, which is what Rodarte promises for fall. Known for their convoluted knits, mishmash prints and cutting techniques, love of horror films, life in Southern California, and friend fans such as Dakota Fanning and Natalie Portman, who both sat front row today along with legendary filmmaker George Lucas (AMAZING), they’re also one of the most anticipated shows at NYFW. Their fall collection was inspired by the dusty geography of the Australian outback, and we noticed some 1940s styling, superb coats we’d like to wear now, and a smattering of beautiful dresses fit for the awards carpets. Let’s get into this sandtrap of loveliness…

We loved the prodigious use of earthy oranges and burnt siennas interwoven with black floral and mosaic prints. It’s an overtly feminine collection with flouncy layers, waist-hugging shapes, and a plethora of pretty dresses. We’re obsessed with the sparkle black and brown stripe midi dress with an oversized black collar and floral hem. Also, there are suits! Rodarte + suiting = grown-up Hepburn-era magic. Did we mention the Rodarte girls are launching a shoe collection? Some of the pieces were in this very show, including Plexiglas heels filled with sand (um, YES PLEASE). The chunky knit sweaters and high-waisted khaki pants were in keeping with the desert landscape theme; they’re also totally wearable. An orange and white striped double-breasted coat paired with a flowing white dress and teased ’n’ bobbed blonde hair reminded us of Taylor Swift.

There were SO MANY good dresses. Our faves were this mint green and black boxy dress with a floral overlay and black tribal motif across the bodice. But the gauzy, ghostly handprint dress was a SENSATION. How gorgeous is this? It’s cut beautifully but has an unexpected print, which we like. There were several Amelia Earhart-esque shearling and leather coats (both long and cropped) over frothy dresses and knee-high boots that we can see Oh Land wearing (she was also sitting front row). The final walk of the show was set to Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream”, which is fitting as we thought this whole collection was a total dream.
