Karl Lagerfeld likes to speak his mind. The Chanel designer and Fendi creative director (not to mention photographer, book collector, music aficionado, and kitten lover) has been doing a stint as global guest editor of Metro newspapers, and he had a few things on his mind. As you are probably well aware, we love ourselves some KL here at MTV Style. The man is an icon and multifaceted designer of numerous lines—including his own—as well as remaining a rabid consumer of new music. He never seems to tire of the latest and greatest female artists, either, and has championed everyone from muse Florence Welch to, most recently, Azealia Banks. Well, when he was recently asked by a staff member at Metro what he thought about Lana Del Rey he had some rather interesting things to say, and he didn’t stop there. Oh no, as our opinionated Uncle Karl is wont to do, he went ahead and threw in his thoughts on Adele and M.I.A. too.

While working in Metro’s Paris offices, Karl took some time to discuss the headlines of the day. In regards to Lana Del Rey, he said, “I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad.” He seemed really taken with Lana being modern as he went on to say, “Lana Del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She’s not alone with implants.” See? He tells it like it is. That may be his opinion, yes, but it doesn’t matter to Karl if Lana has knee implants, fake cheekbones, or a third eye because she’s MODERN, and don’t lots of people have these kinds of things? He went on to say, “The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.” Um, OK, whoa there, KL. That’s a wee bit harsh, no? If you enjoy her music and face, do you really need to mention her weight? It’s not really relevant. But, ohhh, this is just how KL rolls (or how it rolls off the tip of his Diet Pepsi-tinged tongue).

When asked about M.I.A. giving the middle finger at the Super Bowl, Lagerfeld said, “Nowadays people give the middle finger quite quickly—it’s not the best behavior. Everybody does that, what’s new about that?” We can agree with this statement, but then he elaborated (of course) and said, “It’s just become a bad habit. People in magazines are 50% bimbo and 50% pregnant women.” Wait, what does this mean, Uncle Karl? Are you talking about my neighborhood in Brooklyn? It kind of seems like you are. Or are you thinking about gossip magazines? Is this in reference to women throwing the middle finger while being either A) ditzy or B) pregnant, and doing so while being photographed for some sort of newsstand publication? If so, we MUST see this magazine immediately.
