In case you missed it, Madonna put on one heck of a performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl, singing not three, as originally reported, but FIVE songs from her arsenal of hits and doing it all while wearing sparkling Givenchy. We knew the Queen of Pop was gonna bring it (and with recent collaborators Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. in tow), but we had NO idea she was going to parade some of her greatest hits in designer Spartan-wear while also singing a duet with Cee Lo Green in matching sequin choir robes. Yes, it was epic (and polarizing for the love-it or hate-it audience), but we have to give a standing O to the original pop music superstar diva. Not only did she bring half-clothed gladiator “Vogue” boys and b-boy dancers wearing Jeremy Scott for Adidas to the show, she exploded some serious FASH-PIZAZZ confetti dust all over the world of American football. Let’s dissect this sparkle motion, shall we?

Madge opened the show with her classic MTV hit “Vogue” (which, if you happened to miss it or, you know, weren’t born yet, was done all Marie Antoinette-style at the 1990 VMAs). In a stroke of both fashion and marketing genius, Madonna arrived into the Super Bowl stadium from behind giant feather fans in a gold sequin Givenchy cape, latex fingerless gloves, and a giant gold Philip Treacy headpiece. All the while, the finger snap intro to “Vogue” gave way to mock covers of Vogue magazine projected digitally onto the football field while M disrobed (literally) to reveal a black and gold minidress with Spartan-by-way-of-WWE studded adornment. Her cape shortened to reveal a leopard-print lining, and as she continued to disrobe (losing the cape, headpiece, and belt) the Madge mash-up mega-mix shifted into Music.” Next came her latest song, “Gimme All Your Luvin’,” where Ms. M added gold pom-poms to her outfit, along with red and black leather Fausto Puglisi-outfitted cheerleader princesses Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., who whooped it up in Egyptian-esque Erickson Beamon headpieces.

As if this wasn’t enough—and, frankly, we thought the show was going to end there—Madonna pulled out an oldie but a goodie, “Open Your Heart,” which was completely unexpected and also totally cool in our humble, music video-obsessed opinions (this IS MTV, y’know), that then gave way to *GASP* “Like A Prayer“. Madonna vanished only to emerge in a long black dress with black sequins across the bodice and in large triangle shapes down to her knees. Cee Lo came out, too, in a matching all-sequin black robe to help her sing the once-controversial hit. There was a ginormous choir, messages of World Peace, and then Madonna disappeared in an explosion of light and smoke. Dissect it how you will, but it was a big, bold, style spectacle of a performance that was cohesive, familiar, fun, and also sometimes totally random; in other words, it was MADONNA. And it was entertaining.
