The Best Dressed Of The 2012 SAG Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards is the one awards show that’s for actors by actors. It’s like the fun younger sibling to the Golden Globes, as it honors acting achievement in both film and television and guarantees a fashion PARADE that signals that last triumphant push toward the Oscars. (We’re in the final stretch, people!) Usually the SAG stahhs tend to mix it up and get a bit more playful on the ol’ red carpet, and for this year’s 2012 SAG Awards there was no shortage of vibrant color, mega texture, cutouts, plunging necklines, volumes of feathers, and even a 1970s studded pantsuit. So what are we waiting for? Let’s get into this…

Dianna Agron opted for POW color with magenta Carolina Herrera. Always the go-to designer for ladylike red carpet gowns, we think this look is very awards-friendly yet eye-catching for both the deep neckline and intricately braided updo. It’s also just straight-up pretty and makes us think about springtime, Valentine’s Day, and the scent of prize-winning roses.

This was undoubtedly the year of Marilyn Monroe, and no one brought her to life with more style and panache than Michelle Williams. Arriving on the SAG Awards red carpet in her much-imitated blonde pixie and perfectly complected glow, Williams easily took top style honors in her all-over scarlet Valentino dress. A one-shoulder, body-skimming silhouette framing her bodice in cap-sleeved red lace, this is all about class. I mean, she IS the red carpet, right? Love the matching platform sandals and pedicure, too. This is how it’s done.

OK, we’re going to go ahead and crown Emma Stone a red carpet CHAMPION. This gal always hits the press line with a gigantic smile, perfect hair and makeup, and seriously gorge designer dresses. This time around, she chose a beautifully structured black Alexander McQueen tea-length dress that hugged her bodice in haphazard lace and contoured her waist before fanning out into a full skirt. The fullness of the skirt works with the V-shaped princess cut of the top half and is divine with those black peep-toe, ankle-strapped mega heels. We like the simple side-swept hair and dangly earrings, but most of all, it’s that beatific smile that gets us every time.

If there was one dress that drew unanimous gasps and gahhhhs from the entire MTV Style crew, it was Jenna Ushkowitz and her floral cutout Rebecca Minkoff dress. Um, hello GORGEOUS. At first, there’s an understated feel to it all simply by virtue of the delicate pattern and more subdued hues. Your eyes start to travel over Jenna’s ombre hair draped with bohemian ease over her shoulders. The cap sleeves keep it demure while the criss-cross waist cutouts remind you that this ladylike femininity has some edge. Upon further glance, you realize that the floral part of the dress is actually a chiffon overlay and that there’s actually some legginess. The maxi length reminds you that this is a gown, though, and to one we give a standing ovation.

Every single awards show, we hope someone will give us a moment of CRAY. Not a frisson of awkward or a too-self-aware bit of sexiness, but we just need one person to kick it up a bit and have some fun, y’know? Well, for the SAG Awards we give the FANCY FREE award to Rose Byrne and her sparkling white 1970s Elie Saab pantsuit. When Ms. Byrne was being interviewed on the red carpet, she stated that she was “gonna rock it tonight,” and she did in this plunging confection of retro space-age genius. Mayjah kudos on the new blunt, Wintour-ish bob, too. Byrne said that this Elie Saab number is actually from 2009 (GASP!) and that she tried it on long ago hoping to find the perfect time to wear it (AWESOME). She also name-dropped the movie Scarface as her outfit’s inspiration. It doesn’t get much cooler than this…well, at least not on this carpet.

Modern Family’s Ariel Winter looked very grown up and turned out in her gray sequin and lace Collette Dinnigan dress. Again, this is the perfect length for this type of awards show, and though you can’t tell from this picture, the sequined bodice of the dress was insanely sparkly in the best way. We LOVE the age-appropriateness, wavy hair, pink cheeks, shaped brows, and full lace skirt tipped out in matching pumps. Also, although gray seems like a difficult color to pull off, we think it’s elegant and lovely with a sunny countenance. This is also a DREAM prom dress, not to mention one of our absolute favorite looks of the night.

Naya Rivera at the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

As we always hope for cray-cray red carpet moments, we also wish for va-va-voom too. At this year’s SAG Awards, our fash horns were honking for Naya Rivera’s total lady vixen Naeem Khan gown. WHOA, right?! Aside from the bazoombage she has going on, the intricacy of this shimmery art deco beading is mind-boggling. We wonder if this gown weighs a gazillion pounds; if it does, she’s pulling it off like a PRO. Look at that perfect waterfall of chocolate curls cascading over her shoulder while also framing her face. This look is very old-school Hollywood starlet, and we think this glommed-up image suits Miss Rivera well. Our only critique would be a delicate tint of color on the lips. Still, BEAU-TAY incarnate.

Emily Blunt at the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

As we learned from some of the best dressed ladies at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards, if you want to stand out on the red carpet, make ’em green with envy. We’re thrilled that there has been so much brightness on the red carpet this year, and even more so that it happens to be GREEN, as it really is a perfect color for everybody. Case in point, Emily Blunt’s Irish Spring green Oscar de la Renta gown. While relatively standard in length, cut, and draping, this dress is all about the vibrancy of the color. It’s almost Christmas-y in hue but balanced out by Blunt’s alabaster glow up top and through the generous slit up her leg. Again, the smile makes it all pop.

Emilia Clarke at the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

OK, WHOA, Emilia Clarke. When we first saw this petal-shouldered Chanel gown come down the red carpet with its trailing nest of a thousand crows, we couldn’t figure out WHO was wearing this perfection confection. It took us a moment to recognize the formerly platinum blonde Game of Thrones actress. Now THIS is a DRESS. With a stiff, high-necked ivory collar and bubble shoulders that frame an almost empire waist before giving way to a floral belted floor-length skirt made up of volumes of undulating black sorrow feathers, we don’t know what to say other than YES. What a way to bring the DRAMZ to an awards show celebrating drama. Well done, princess warrior, well done.

Angelina Jolie at the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

Last, but not least, Angelina Jolie emerged from her limo wearing a slick of wet ink running down her perennially bodacious bod. Not literally, of course, but this Jenny Packham gown looks like molten obsidian lava that is halter-hugging her décolletage before spilling over her lower half to the floor. We expect Ms. Jolie to wear black, yes, but she does it like NO ONE else, and always seems to pull off gold hoops with straight hair like nobody’s biz. Angie J? You’re still perfect after all these years, and we love your steadfast adherence to the temple of goth as well as your totally intimidating visage. #NeverChange
