Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sisterly design force behind Rodarte, will make their costume design debut for Mozart's opera Don Giovanni at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Working in conjunction with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and mega architect Frank Gehry, who will design the sets, the duo will outfit eight principle characters in a way we assume will be arresting, unique, and totally them, which is to say intricate ensembles that might possibly involve woven or layered fabric techniques, eerie silk prints, and insanely high shoes that are difficult to walk in. In short, we're going to go ahead and assume that these costumes will be mind-numbingly awesome.

In a statement released by the L.A. Philharmonic, Kate and Laura said, "Opera has always been a part of us; our grandmother was from Rome and studied it as a young girl. To be a part of the legacy of Don Giovanni is an amazing opportunity." OK, now that we know opera's in their blood, we're even more excited to find a way to see this cultural cornucopia of fashion and music bacchanalia when it debuts in May. This is just the kind of epic event that demands a road trip complete with horror movie soundtrack (this is a dark opera about a doomed lothario), Rodarte muse trivia games, and a traveling wardrobe inspired by the California coast and/or actual Ebay'd pieces from the Rodarte for Target collection. It's hard, but I'm totally resisting the urge to make some sort of "Frock me, Amadeus!" sentiment right now because, really, the idea of Rodarte and MOZART and Frank Gehry is a little too much to handle. Gehry's even excited! He says, "Kate and Laura's work reminds me of my early days—it is free and fearless and not precious." This is an apt statement and one that makes us collectively wonder, what will their costumes look like?
