Why Is Bebe’s New Bridal Collection So Expensive?

In case you haven’t heard, Bebe has been restructuring its brand for a “softer” and more “age appropriate” collection over the past year in hopes of pulling away from the Kim Kardashian-esque vibe it’s often associated with. (Well, having Kim K doing a line for your collection will prrooobabblly do that.) Bebe swapped out its old models with new ones and is adding a greater variety of clothing to appeal to more women—including *GASP* a bridal line! We peeped some new looks from the collection, and, um, we are SURPRISED. We understand the attempt to appeal to women between the ages of 25 and 35, but we are flabbergasted to find out the curve-hugging bridal gowns will cost anywhere between $950 and $2,500! If you go on Bebe’s website right this second, no dress costs more than $179. So…what exactly would make us want to drop a pretty penny on anything from the bridal collection? We’re confused.

Bebe’s bridal designer, Project Runway’s Season 4 runner-up Rami Kashou, calls his dresses “feminine, elegant, timeless, and romantic” and “a celebration of the hourglass figure.” The first 10 gowns from the line will come in silk taffeta, silk satin, charmeuse, georgette, organza, and chiffon. But when we actually LOOK at dresses from the collection, we’re feeling a little underwhelmed. We can find a strapless sweetheart draped fishtail dress almost anywhere for HALF that price, and while that tiered dress is exactly what Rami was going for (timeless and feminine), we still can’t image laying down thousands of dollars to sport it. In fact, we did a little shopping, and we could buy a GORGE one-shoulder Vera Wang for David’s Bridal gown for under $650, AND we wouldn’t have to deal with everyone’s side-eye when we say we bought our wedding gown from Bebe. I mean, don’t get us wrong—we’re loving the fact that Bebe is taking a stride in a fanciful new direction, but shouldn’t the bridal gowns still reflect the original line’s price point? Well, soon enough you can judge for yourself! The gowns will hit four Bebe flagship stores in New York, L.A., and Chicago come March and will be available to purchase by appointment only.
