Rooney Mara Premieres ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ In Nothing But Cutout Outfits

It’s the biggest movie of the END of the year with crazy hype, legions of fans, and the titular debut of a relatively new actress in the title role. Yes, we’re talking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which stars Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, aka the girl…with the dragon tattoo (obvs). This whole edgy franchise with music by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor (and a theme song featuring MTV Style fave Karen O), is set to open here in the U.S. on Dec. 21. The film has already had premieres in Stockholm, London, and New York, and Miss Mara has stayed true to the ferocity of her character by choosing red carpet outfits that are just as fierce. We’re talking designer dresses (and PANTSUITS!) with large swaths of fabric missing. Think: The Girl With the Cutout Taboo. (Yes, I went there.) But, really, we’re totally diggin’ each and every one of these complementary red carpet choices, so let’s take a deeper look shall we?

For the New York premiere, Rooney chose a racy black Prabal Gurung dress from his spring 2012 collection. Cut out at the shoulder and cut all the way up to the upper thigh with fabric draping down the front and a light netted overlay dusting her shoulders and legs, we’re maniacal about this dress. Offset with pointy Christian Louboutin heels, hair slicked to the side (how they hid those super short bangs we’ll never know), strong brows, and the perfect lip, this is just what we were hoping Lisbeth/Rooney would wear for her debut. Contrastingly, for the London premiere, she chose a dramatic white gown from the Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci fall 2011 collection. A body contouring silhouette that was cut out delicately in front of the shoulders as well as along the ribcage, this whole look screams white witch with her inky black fringe and dark, transfixing stare. We love the light lace arms with wing embellishments and the dramatic, see-through back. Much like the Prabal dress (which had nothing but a thin sheath of netting over her completely bare back), the drama came from all sides and not just the cutouts.

For the Stockholm premiere (which is where the movie was filmed), Rooney wore a Roksanda Ilincic pantsuit from the 2012 resort collection that featured a crisscross halter top connected to high-waisted 1940s-style trousers. The cutouts were inverted V shapes on either side of her navel and were much more subtle than those on her NY/London dresses. Kudos to Rooney’s stylist for going with a theme and sticking to it and for starting a trend while doing so. Even though H&M’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo collection is now available (and we’ve got our eyes on several of those pieces), we’re also inspired to just take the DIY approach and run some scissors through our own dresses. There’s nothing taboo about that, right?
