Carey Mulligan Gets Dramatic In The New Issue Of 'W,' Poses With A Cute Chipmunk

We're still a year away from what is sure to be a beguiling spectacle of cinematic style thanks to the forthcoming adaptation of The Great Gatsby, but that doesn't mean we can't start emulating Carey Mulligan now. It seems like every designer was clamoring to get a Gatsby reference into their spring 2012 show (like Ralph Lauren and Alice + Olivia), especially when it was announced that Miss Mulligan would be playing the titular role of Daisy Buchanan, who happens to know her way around many a fashionable 1920s frock. But Mulligan has a role in a new movie, Shame, of which she shows a less-than-angelic side to her acting self, and W magazine captures this edgier, more modern character in its January 2012 issue. We happen to think this Mulligan look is very now, and not just because it's all about L.A. cool. Oh, no, we're down with this "W" spread because of the presence of one adorable accessory...a CHIPMUNK.

Carey M poses on the cover of the magazine in nothing but her skivvies. While they're white and meant to look somewhat demure, we don't think we've ever seen her look more mature than in this photo shot by Michael Thompson. The whole W spread has her playing the role of an actress in L.A., so it includes images like waiting for a past love on the balcony of the Chateau Marmont in a Miu Miu cream top that can barely stay atop her shoulders (of course). She has a look that simultaneously screams, "I love you, but I hate you" and her hair is a gigantic blowout of teased-up blonde proportions (bonus points for those mega dark brows, which are all about DRAMZ). But, seriously, we cannot get enough of this super cute pale yellow Prada dress adorned in vintage cars and a chipmunk friend atop her shoulder. Just look at the li'l guy sitting up there making Carey perk up her cheekbones in a tickle-me-Elmo smile while he (Alvin, Simon, Theodore?) just clutches on like owns her clavicle. This is high fashion 'dorbness like we've never seen, and we seriously love Edward Enninful's styling. Carey rounds out the spread weeping behind Tom Ford sunglasses while her sparkly Rochas sweater catches glints from the California sun. Pretty, yes, but if we're going to be honest, we'd like MORE WOODLAND CREATURES, PLEASE. That's a note to fashion editors everywhere.
