How To Accessorize Your Jean Jacket With Pins

This autumnal season is all about weird, wishy-washy weather. Some days it’s chilly, and other days it’s oddly muggy with a whiff of rain. The one item of clothing that has been seeing me through is my denim jacket. Not only does it provide an extra layer of warmth across the thin-skinned torso and chest region, it looks super cool with anything from shorts and tights to long dresses with lace-up boots (very Rayanne Graff from My So-Called Life, which you should totally Hulu if you haven’t seen it yet). I’ve always adored denim jackets for their versatility and hint o’ rebel, but they need a bit of jazzing up sometimes, a bit of feminine zhuzhing, if you will. This is where pins come in. If there’s any accessory that does double or TRIPLE duty for adorning your jackets, blazers, dresses, and canvas bags, it’s the trusty brooch. Not only are they cheap, you can pilfer them from your grandma if necessary. (But be sure to ask first!)

First of all, a good denim jacket is key. It doesn’t matter if it’s new or vintage, just find one that sings to you. This Levi’s Trucker Jacket ($78) is new but looks appropriately worn, so will fit the bill just fine. Now, wearing one gigantic pin on your jacket is fun, but sometimes it’s more fun to group them in twos and threes so you can add a dash of whimsy to your chosen ensemble with a happy hodge-podge of shapes and characters. I like to mix similar colors or put things together based on a theme. For example, this group is all about dusty vintage glamour and would look PERF on a lighter or darker denim jacket (or even a super old and tattered one for a rock and roll kind of feel). I like this mix of gold and silver and the slight nod to the Wild West while not actually tipping over into cow country. You can put the Topshop Round Old Compass Brooch ($18) in the middle then play the Layered Wing Brooch ( $25) off it below. Top it all off with one or a couple pins from the Skull and Cross Brooch Pack ($28). Need more ideas? Right this way…

Here’s another example of juxtaposing seemingly dissimilar items for maximum quirky appeal. The Layered Star Brooch Pack ($28) can work just on its own since it’s a pack of three (while also doing double duty on a black tuxedo jacket), but it’s even more eye-catching when you actually put it with, ahem, EYES. This Tatty Devine Cartoon Eyes Brooch (£24) is both cute and hilarious and could also stand alone. But I encourage you to play around, mix it up! Just to show you I practice what I preach, here’s my motley assortment of pins today. Yes, that’s a set of shiny lips with a vintage paint brush and pineapple man. WUT?
