How To Wear Matching Prints And Accessories

I’m going to get right to it. I like accessories. Like, A LOT. I never leave home without something on my person selected from a motley crew of plastic animals, found pins, hand-me-down bracelets, brooches, vintage necklaces, bits of fabric, and random earrings that I’m not ashamed to say is kept in an assortment of shoeboxes. Here’s the thing, if you’re a skinnies and tee gal, or you really love your new jean jacket but think it needs jazzing, OR if just don’t have the time to throw together some elaborate street photographer-ready outfit, you can spruce up anything (and I do mean ANYTHING) with an awesome accessory or two (or three, trust me). My favorite thing for fall has been layering accessories by a theme too. Ever wondered if you can wear polka dots on top of polka dots or if it’s cool to wear several different animals at once? I’m here to tell you that IT’S OK; in fact, it’s an easy way to add a bit of whimsy to your outfit. Also, it works with practically any combo. Here are some ideas…

Stars are HUUUUGE for fall. Not only were they all over Dolce & Gabbana’s fall collection, they’ve been knocked off by pretty much every retailer (which means you can get your hands on this look for LESS). I personally don’t think there’s any wrong amount of stars in an outfit. Sky’s the limit, y’know? They just work for some reason, and in abundance. I would invest in this ASOS Swarovski Silver and Crystal Pleasure Star Ring ($109.62) because it truly goes with everything (and is really cute dressed up or down). Pair it with black skinny jeans, a white T-shirt, and this Topshop Black Star Print Blazer ($130). Throw this Just Acces Toft Leather Star Pendant ($26.96) over your tee and you’re good to go! *Bonus sparkle* Add some glittery oxfords and your look screams INTERSTELLAR CHIC. Need more ideas? Right this way please…

I have a serious weakness for DINOSAURS. They’re cute, oddly shaped, and FIERCE when you wear them as a look. This Dot Dino Sweat by Tee and Cake ($60) is the T’s KNEES (T as in TYRANNOSAURUS). I mean, a connect-the-dots DINO SWEATSHIRT? Are you kidding me?! It’s so insanely awesome, and would look even more outrageously fun with a Tatty Devine Dinosaur Necklace (£114). ROOOAAAR! Throw this combo over some jeans, add these li’l Dino Post Earrings ($12), and you will have peeps screaming (at your RAWRSOMENESS) while you’re out and about on a Saturday afternoon.

Yes, skull prints are still in, and yes it’s OK to layer ’em up while not looking like a Hell’s She-Angel. The ASOS Skull Knuckleduster Ring ($14.38) is a fantastic way to introduce a little rock and roll into your wardrobe even if you’re unsure about adding the rest. It’s not screaming SKUUULLL, either; it’s one of those accessories that people will want to take a closer look at before asking you where you bought it. If you want to go for the whole look, though, pair this Ombre Skull Vest ($36) with a miniskirt, tights, Bing Bang Tiny Skull Post Earrings ($30), moto boots, and messy hair. Total rocker-dude magnet right there.

Just like stars, polka dots are a big trend for fall. They’re everywhere, and what’s great about that is they go with lots of different looks. You can toughen ’em up or sweeten them out. They’re totally classic and pop art-y. OK, so to achieve maximum POLKA POWER, I say you should embrace this trend fully. I like this Cream Spot Midi Dress ($98), which you can wear with tights and flats for a holiday lunch. Here’s where you need to trust me. This Polka Dot Head Wrap ($150) is kind of crazy expensive, but you get the idea. Wrap your head in ANY dotted scarf that’s a different color from your dress. It’s perfectly OK to polka your heart out, so throw in an Anthropologie Polka Rounds Clutch ($148) or any other polka dot bag that is the same color combo as either your dress or scarf and your entire outfit will sing. It may be a little loud, but that’s what polka music is all about, right?
